THE four preliminary finalists delivered half of this year's 40-man All-Australian squad. But how many will make the final cut?

Hawthorn, Geelong, Fremantle and Sydney all boasted five nominees in the squad with the top four again set to dominate selection.

But could bottom-four outfit Western Bulldogs provide a pair of players? Will Minson and Ryan Griffen earned nominations and are tipped to feature.

FOX FOOTY WILL HAVE THE ALL-AUSTRALIAN ANNOUNCEMENT LIVE

Another cellar-dweller, Gold Coast, could provide the team's skipper in Gary Ablett.

There won't be any Tigers, with Richmond surprisingly snubbed by selectors despite its 15-win season and finals berth, while Carlton and Brisbane Lions also failed to win a nomination.

GWS Giants didn't. The baby club's goalkicking machine Jeremy Cameron was named in the squad of 40 and could breakthrough into the side in just his second season.

Port Adelaide sensation Chad Wingard could do likewise, while North Melbourne has five players in contention.

Follow our live coverage below and join in the conversation as the team is announced.

Fairytale over as Port axe seven

Gone ... Ken Hinkley talks with Matt Thomas and Darren Pfeiffer. Source: Dean Martin / News Limited

PORT Adelaide has cleared five spots on its AFL senior list by cutting Matt Thomas, Nathan Blee, Nick Salter and Daniel Stewart.

This follows the retirement of Magarey Medallist Brett Ebert.

The Power also has cut Danny Butcher, Justin Hoskin and Darren Pfeiffer from the rookie list.

The decisions clear the path for Thomas - a Magarey Medal favourite - to join Richmond as a free agent and for Sandover Medallist Kane Mitchell to be promoted from the rookie list.

Veteran forward Brett Ebert will also leave the club after retiring earlier in the season.

Thomas played 87 games for Port Adelaide after being drafted in the 2006 pre-season draft at pick No.8.

Rookie elevations Stewart and Salter managed 36 and 21 games respectively, while Blee was taken with pick No.51 in the 2011 national draft and featured in 6 games.

Of the rookies, Pfeiffer was the only one to play an AFL game, managing 7 games after crossing from Carlton where he played 16.

"This time of the year is always challenging and it is a particularly difficult time for players who have been on the edge and are told that their services are no longer required," Hinkley said.

"These decisions are only made after the utmost consideration but it still doesn't make it any easier.

"Although we don't see this group of players as part of our future it doesn't mean that each one of them, in their own different way, hasn't made a contribution to this football club."

Meanwhile, Brisbane Lions delisted three players.

As the club attempts to hold onto a raft of talented youngsters, Niall McKeever, Callum Bartlett, Richard Newell and Stephen Wrigley were cut.

Bartlett, McKeever and Newell all played in the Lions NEAFL Grand Final win over Aspley on the weekend while Wrigley is recovering from a knee reconstruction.

Lions' football operations manager Dean Warren thanks the players for their contributions.

"Everyone at the Brisbane Lions would like to sincerely thank these young men for their professionalism and commitment to the Club during their time here," Warren said.

"We wish them only the best for the future."

Dusty denies walking out on Tigers

DUSTIN Martin insists he hasn't walked out on Richmond and just needs time to make up his mind over a new contract.

Melbourne is leading the race for the 22-year-old's signature after Richmond released a statement on Monday saying Martin had told the club he wanted to pursue offers from rival clubs.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

But Martin later took to Twitter to deny he had quit the club.

"There have been a lot of conflicting stories going around about myself and the Richmond Footy Club," he said in the first of a series of tweets.

"At the weekend, I asked my manager Ralph Carr to request an extension of time from Richmond, to allow me to fully consider the options about my future.

"This decision was made purely by me, together with my family.

"As you can understand, this is a very important decision for myself and my family and one that I won't make lightly. I want to make it clear that I appreciate everyone's patience in allowing me the time to make this decision.

"The claims that I have walked out on the Richmond Football Club are totally incorrect. I can tell you that at this time, no decision has been made."

It is believed Demons coach Paul Roos has had several discussions with Martin's manager Ralph Carr in the past week.

The Demons, who could also use its priority pick if it was to receive one from the AFL, confirmed their interest late on Monday.

"Melbourne did make inquiries to his management about his intentions for next year," football manager Josh Mahoney said.

"We are waiting to hear back from them before we discuss any steps we might take as a club."

The Demons are not the only the club who have made inquiries about Martin, who told the Tigers today he wanted to pursue offers from other clubs.

Brisbane, which is without a coach, have also had discussions with Carr.

Greater Western Sydney is another club that will investigate a trade.

The Tigers and Martin were reportedly close to a deal on a new contract but Martin baulked at the club's latest offer.

The explosive midfielder/forward was on an estimated $450,000 this season and the club's offer was believed to be about $500,000 a season.

"Given the considerable effort we have put into Dustin's development both on and off the field, and our efforts to retain him all season, we are extremely disappointed with this decision," Richmond football manager Dan Richardson said.

"We are proud of the way Dustin has developed as a footballer, and as a person, in his time at Richmond, and we have been steadfast in our view that he is a required player who has an exciting football career ahead of him.

"However, we understand the business of football, and Dustin's right to pursue other opportunities.

"We have also stated previously that we are determined to adhere to our payment strategy for all of our players, many of whom have already committed to the Club and its future direction during the 2013 season."

Martin is not a free agent so Richmond will have to do a deal with another club to secure a move.

The Tigers also have the option of forcing Martin into the draft, where GWS has the No.1 pick.

Martin was taken with pick three in the 2009 national draft and has played 86 matches.

His move means two of the top three picks in that draft have left their original team, following No.1 selection Tom Scully's defection from Melbourne.

Angry fans demand Cowboys rematch

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 15 September 2013 | 16.42

FURIOUS North Queensland Cowboys fans are taking to the web in a grass-roots campaign to get their team back into the NRL finals following a referee mistake that saw them lose last night's elimination final.

And they have the support of Queensland politician Scott Emerson, who this morning said the NRL should reverse the result after officials acknowledged a blunder.

NRL boss Dave Smith has apologised to the team and management and said he was embarrassed by the performance of match officials.

An online petition, registered at Change.org, entitled 'North Queensland Cowboys: Get the Cowboys back into the finals after an appalling referee decision' has attracted thousands of signatures.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

It had 11,000 signatures by 4pm.

The blunder came when Cronulla's Beau Ryan scored a try on the seventh tackle, a try that changed the result of the game.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

The petition was created by 19-year-old Jazza Vock, a passionate Cowboy's fan who believes that the game itself is being brought into disrepute by these decisions.

"I made the petition immediately after the game finished last night and posted it around a few Facebook places and it's rapidly picked up some support," she said.

"Right now there's about seven signatures a minute and around 400 an hour."

Ms Vock believes the NRL has to take action on the decision.

"I'm hoping for some sort of appeal for the decision what was made - either a rematch or for the Sharks to be stripped of those tackle points," she said.

"I think there's a lot of talk about referees having action put upon them, but that doesn't change the end result."

However other fans aren't taking such a lenient stand, leaving comments on the petition page demanding the referees are investigated for corruption.

Mr Emerson says the decision was disgraceful.

"Last night's game was a disgrace," he told reporters today.

"I've heard the NRL saying today they can't change that result.

"Well I can tell you every Queenslander out there is really demanding they change that result."

Mr Emerson said a refereeing blunder had knocked the Cowboys out of the semi-finals last year as well.

"Cowboys have been robbed for a second year in a row and last night's result, the refereeing decision, was a disgrace."

Tensions are at breaking point amongst northern footy fans, with this the second year in a row they were unceremoniously dumped from the competition by a refereeing mistake.

But Ms Vock believes the Cowboys will rise again.

"There's something about the team and their camaraderie," she said.

"Look at last night; they handled the decision admirably well.

"It's just a shame to see this happen in Matt Bowen's last gameit's a bad way to go out."

Ronaldo extends Real Madrid contract

Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a new Real Madrid deal. Source: JOSE JORDAN / AFP

REAL Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has extended his contract with the club, which had been due to expire in 2015, the Spanish giants said on Sunday.

The Portuguese international will attend a ceremony on Sunday night (AEST) with Real president Florentino Perez at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium to mark the renewal of his contract, the club said on its website without giving further details.

Real Madrid did not give details of the new contract, but the online edition of sports daily Marca said the 28-year-old playmaker had renewed with the club until 2018.

Ronaldo will earn 17 million euros ($24.6 million) per season under his new contract, one million euros ($1.5 million) more each year than his main rival Lionel Messi makes at Barcelona, the newspaper said.

"This renewal is expected to make Ronaldo the highest-paid player in Spanish football," it said.

Ronaldo had been linked with a move to big-spending French clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco in the off-season as Real pursued their interest in Gareth Bale.

The Welsh winger's transfer from Tottenham was finally sealed at the start of September for a reported world record fee of around STG80 million ($138 million) and he made his debut for the club playing alongside Ronaldo in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Villareal.

Silver Ferns down Diamonds

AUSTRALIA'S record losing run has been extended to five games after New Zealand defeated the new-look Diamonds in the opening match of the five Test Constellation Cup in Invercargill tonight.

The 55-51  scoreline was a disappointing result for the Diamonds who had hoped to celebrate Kim Green and Bianca Chatfield's 50th internationals and Laura Geitz's maiden game as captain  with a victory.

The Diamonds were punished by the umpires whistle, incurring more than double the amount of penalties than their rivals in the opening quarter of the game alone and staying out of  favour for the remainder of the match.

But they were mortally wounded by lapses in defence which allowed the Silver Ferns to go on a five-goal run midway through the first quarter and another scoring rampage in the third stanza of the game.

They were lapses which  sealed the fate of the Australian netball team on the 75th anniversary of their first meeting with New Zealand back in 1938.

That game had gone Australia's way but the early defensive errors coupled with an impressive  full court display by the Silver Ferns gave the host nation the honours tonight.

Caitlin Bassett was a standout for the Diamonds, shooting 100 per cent with her 20 goals in the first half of the match and ending the game with 31 from 31.

"We are pretty disappointed with that," Geitz said The next Test of the five-game Constellation Cup will be played in Auckland on September 19.

The Diamonds and Silver Ferns will then fly to Australia for the final three matches in Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra.

The series is the last the two powers of netball will play with each other prior to next year 's Commonwealth Games.

CANBERRA Raiders interim coach Andrew Dunemann has been cut by the NRL club.

Ricky Stuart signed on as 2014 NRL coach this week.

"Under a new restructure, Dunemann agreed to take a payout and accepted there is no position for him," the club said in a statement.

Dunemann said: "I wish the club all the best and thank them for the opportunity given to me by David Furner to come and work with the Raiders. I owe the club a great debt and I believe the club has plenty of good years in front of them...

"I'm working to find a position at another club and hope to continue my coaching career at NRL level. I would not have any hesitation to return to the Raiders one day if given the opportunity."

Dunemann has been linked to the North Queensland coaching job vacated by Neil Henry.

Which Carlton will show up?

Chris Judd led the good Carlton against Richmond in the second half. Source: George Salpigtidis / News Limited

THESE two teams approach today's game with vastly different momentum.

Carlton comes in on the back of two pulsating wins, Sydney after back-to-back losses to Hawthorn.

One key for the Swans will be to get more outside uncontested ball because this will allow them to capitalise on the opportunities they created last week.

They won in contested possessions and clearances yet, with their lack of run, they were unable to enter the forward 50 enough times to give them a chance to win the game.

If they do run and spread, that will mean Carlton defenders will have to sit under the long, high ball all night, which is a massive challenge because Sydney has a multitude of tall marking targets, in Tippett, Mumford, Pyke and White.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

This battle will be one that will have a massive impact on the game.

The question for football fans is which Carlton will show up?

As good as last week's win was, the Blues' first half was woeful. They were beaten in almost every facet of the game but, to their credit, they turned it around in the second, finishing the game on top of the Tigers in most statistical categories except inside 50s and overall disposals.

If the Carlton from the second half last week shows up against Sydney, it will no doubt make for an extremely hard-fought game.

The Blues showed in this period they have enough experienced stars to trouble any team.

As John Longmire suggested earlier in the week, I suspect Chris Judd will be paid very close attention every time he is injected into the midfield.

Last time Judd played in a final at ANZ Stadium, he tore the game apart, a similar feat to last weekend.

CLEARANCES

IT IS no secret Sydney is one of the best clearance teams in the comp, with a class midfield. Carlton will have its hands full trying to negate Kennedy, Jack and Hannebery around the stoppages. But with the form shown last week from the likes of Gibbs, Judd and Murphy the midfield battle is shaping to be the main event.

Gibbs, in particular, had arguably his most influential game as a Blue. His 12 clearances were the difference. He may have finally found his position as a hard edge inside midfielder. Whoever wins the clearances I suggest may win the game — particularly at centre bounces.

MIDFIELD DEPTH

THIS is where Sydney has a significant edge. The Swans' ability to run multiple players through the middle of the ground should wear down the Blues. There is talk the players are mentally tired but they have the capacity to inject the likes of Parker, Mitchell and Bird if the stars wear down.

On the other hand, Carlton has three small forwards that very rarely go into the midfield. Yarran, Garlett and Betts can't take the pressure off Carlton's prime movers and this will hurt in the end.

TIPPETT v JAMISON

TIPPETT'S height has worried most defenders this year. With the hands in the back and chopping the arm rules it becomes very difficult for key defenders playing against the genuine monsters of the game.

I suspect Tippett won't have two poor games in a row and if the delivery is spot on from up the field Jamison will need help from other defenders zoning off.

Sreesanth guilty of spot fixing: report

Shantakumaran Sreesanth is charged with spot fixing in the IPL. Source: Gemunu Amarasinghe / AAP

TEST fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and three other players have been found guilty of spot-fixing during the Indian Premier League by an internal probe conducted by the national cricket board, a report said on Friday.

The probe by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s anti-corruption chief Ravi Sawani, also found two other players guilty of not reporting approaches made by bookmakers, The Indian Express said.

Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were found guilty on multiple accounts, including conceding a "pre-determined number of runs per over in exchange for bribes", the paper quoted the leaked report as saying.

The fourth player, Amit Singh, who played in the IPL till last year, was seen as the conduit between the cricketers and bookies, and described by Sawani as "the bad fish that spoils the entire pond".

Siddharth Trivedi and 21-year-old Harmeet Singh were absolved of spot-fixing, but were found guilty of the lesser charge of not informing officials about approaches made by bookmakers, the newspaper said.

Sawani, whose report will be placed before the BCCI's disciplinary committee, has recommended the players be banned for a period ranging from five years to life, the paper said.

"The disciplinary committee may consider my report and impose such sanctions as considered appropriate to send out a strong signal indicating the zero tolerance policy of the BCCI to any corruption in the sport that is so dear to millions of Indians and fans abroad," the paper quoted Sawani as saying in the report.

"Obviously, the anti-corruption education given to the players had no impact on the conduct. Therefore, the players deserve no leniency whatsoever."

A BCCI spokesman declined to comment on the leaked newspaper story, saying Sawani's findings would be discussed by the disciplinary committee and may be placed before the board's annual general meeting on September 29.

The four players found guilty of spot-fixing are among 39 persons who have also been charged separately by Delhi Police in the corruption scandal that rocked this year's IPL.

All four players belong to the Rajasthan Royals franchise, but Sreesanth, 30, is the only one to have played for India. He was part of the teams that won the World Twenty20 in 2007 and the World Cup in 2011.

The players were arrested in May along with scores of bookies as part of a police investigation into the spot-fixing scandal, which had caused outrage among fans in the cricket-mad nation.

BCCI chief Narayanaswami Srinivasan voluntarily stepped aside from the post in June after his son-in-law was arrested, and later released on bail, over alleged links to illegal bookmakers.

Son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan is one of the owners of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, a team bought by Srinivasan's India Cements conglomerate when the popular Twenty20 league was launched in 2008.

Gambling is mostly illegal in India, but betting on cricket matches thrives through networks of underground bookies.

Spot-fixing -- in which a specific part of a game, but not the result, is fixed -- is also illegal.

WHEN St Kilda full forward Tom Lee slotted the first goal of this match, there was the whiff of an upset in the air.

When the Saints did as they pleased for the next 45 minutes, opening up an eight-goal-to-nil lead, there was the dodgy odour of a Fremantle team not giving its all.

But make no mistake, as the game wore on it became clear that what we were smelling was a party

It is rare that circumstances conspire and allow you to witness an on-field celebration unfolding during a game of AFL football. But after half time, as it became clear that the result was not in doubt, this match became all about a send off for retiring champions Stephen Milne, Justin Koschitzke and Jason Blake.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

St Kilda coach Scott Watters spoke of how the trio ''have been incredible servants of the club'' and that this match signified a figurative ''passing of the baton'' from the old guard to the new brigade.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

The coach revealed there was considerable emotion in the rooms before the game, but added: ''You can't sweep it under the carpet, you've got to acknowledge that it's there. We know it's going to make some impact, we've just to ensure it's a positive one.''

And so it proved.

All three -- as well as 200-gamer Adam Schneider -- made useful contributions.

Milne was the most influential early. His first touch, within seconds of the opening bounce, was roundly cheered despite coming in the unfamiliar territory of a back flank.

When his direct opponent, Clancee Pearce, was subbed off with a calf injury just four minutes into the match, it seemed this might be his day. He did get numerous chances to goal, but was strangely wasteful.

The best effort came midway through the third term when he crumbed the ball from and Adam Schneider leap and slotted the snap, raising both arms in celebration before being swamped by teammates.

Blake, as had been his lot for the past 218 games, was the most understated but dependable of the three players.

For one of the few times in his career he lined up on a man with less career Brownlow votes than him, fourth-gamer Matt Taberner.

As the match wore on he became more and more of a presence marking balls across half back. With about five minutes remaining in the match, teammate Sam Gilbert ran down the backline and signalled for his to move forward.

He promptly demanded the ball on the lead, and moments later kicked a goal that gave him a rare chance to be the centre of attention. He even managed a fist pump for the crowd.

Koschitzke, the sentimental favourite, started on the bench with the green subs vest on. At one point late in the third term he removed the vest expecting to come on for Tom Hickey, and was roundly cheered for completing a run through along the boundary.

Alas he had to put it back on because Dylan Roberton went down injured and needed to be assessed.
When he did come on it was lucky that the match was played with the Etihad Stadium roof open, because it was have been blown off by the ovation.

The last quarter became largely an exercise in kick it to Kosi, even at times when he was outnumbered. The fairy-tale ending seemed complete when he took a powerful grab from a Leigh Montagna pass and went back and slotted the shot from 45 metres.

Every teammate surrounded him and the crowd cheered for close to a minute, however as the ball was about to be bounced the umpires called for a goal review, which showed the ball had clipped the post.

This was the romance, but the driving force for the win was provided in the midfield. Jack Steven capped off what may well be a best-and-fairest season with a club record 47 possessions, a mark equalled in this match by Montagna.

Early in the match Nick Dal Santo did as he pleased across half back, gathering 14 damaging disposals in the first quarter alone, until Alex Forster applied a tag late in the match.

Fremantle, on the other hand, would have struggled to find a player who had the better of his man. The Dockers did not have their first realistic chance to score until the 22-minute mark, but first-gamer Josh Simpson sprayed the shot out of bounds on the full.

Their first point came midway through the second quarter, their first goal not until Jack Hannath plucked a contested mark 45 metres out just before half time.

At times Fremanlte produced about as much pressure as a two-week old party balloon.

Regardless of what Fremantle coach Ross Lyon was attempting to achieve by making 12 changes at the selection table, the insipid performance that the Dockers produced here may yet backfire.

The farcical Fremantle effort may have actually played the Dockers team and several individuals out of form going into the finals.

The great wonder is that Lyon didn't hand over the white board to assistant coach Peter Sumich and stay back in Perth to freshen up for the finals.
