A Cricket Australia spokesperson confirmed that the bright young star will have further checks for any potential injury in coming days.
Cummins complained of back and rib soreness, sparking concerns of another side strain injury, after touching down in Sydney with the Sydney Sixers following their Champions League Twenty20 triumph.
"I'm not 100 per cent sure of the results yet," Cummins said. "We're still investigating, but will know in the next couple of days."
Originally hopefully of being part of the NSW team for the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland beginning at Brisbane's Allan Border Field tomorrow, Cummins said he was now not playing club cricket on the weekend.
"Pat came back from Champions League T20 with some back soreness,'' the CA spokesperson said.
"He had preliminary scans (on Wednesday) and is due to have further investigations over the next few days to establish a diagnosis.''
Cummins starred for the Sixers in the tournament in South Africa, playing in all six matches while picking up six wickets at an average of 26.5.

It is understood Cricket Australia ordered the scans, with Cummins yet to link up with the NSW team since returning to Sydney on Tuesday.
After having the scans, the 19-year-old met CA physiotherapist Alex Kountouris to discuss the latest injury setback.
Last year, Cummins sat out the entire Test summer with a heel complaint incurred in the Test series in South Africa.
He also flew home midway through Australia's one-day tour of England after picking up a side strain in the first match in June.
Cummins, whose only first-class match in the past 18 months was his brilliant Test debut against South Africa, had been hopeful of playing on the fourth day of NSW's Sheffield Shield match against Queensland, which starts on Friday.
That was considered the first step in his plans to regain Test selection later in the summer, but those plans might have to be shelved again.
