Holden star Jamie Whincup has tightened his grip on this year's V8 Supercars championship after winning the first of three sprint races in Abu Dhabi.

Whincup jumped ahead of Ford polesitter Will Davison before the end of lap one to lead each of Saturday's 12 laps at Yas Marina Circuit.

Davison managed to hold on to second place in a hard-fought battle with fellow Ford driver Shane Van Gisbergen. Tim Slade, Lee Holdsworth and Mark Winterbottom rounded out the trail of Fords in the top six.

Holden's James Courtney was the only car forced to retire in a relatively-clean race on the 5.5km Formula One circuit.

He returned to the pits less than a quarter of the way through with damage from a collision involving Holden drivers Alex Premat and Rick Kelly, and Ford's Tony D'Alberto.

Kelly's smoking Holden also made a brief appearance in the pit lane on lap eight with suspected oil cooler issues.

Whincup's victory is his 61st race win in the V8 Supercars and adds 100 points to his 3060 championship total, extending his lead over Winterbottom by 318 points.

The race is the only one of the weekend to be run on the harder compound tyre, with the next two - at 7pm (EDT) Saturday and 8.30pm (EDT) Sunday - to use soft tyres.

It's the first time the V8s have raced for championship points at a Formula One Grand Prix meet.
