Whoops ... the $49m bet on an A-League match was actually in Hong Kong dollars. Source: Craig Greenhill / News Limited

That unbelievable news last week that Asian gamblers wagered almost $50 million on a single A-League game? The reason you didn't believe it is because it's not strictly true.

Football Federation Australian has revealed the Victorian police officer and FIFA spokesman who variously estimated the plunge at $40 million and $49 million were talking Hong Kong dollars, not Australian dollars. That puts the figure at a more believable $5-6m

"Football Federation Australia  wishes to correct media reports that more than $A40 million was wagered in Asia on a Hyundai A-League match in December 2012" said FFA in a statement on Thursday.

"The error occurred when media outlets reported the estimated figure in Australian dollars instead of the correct denomination of Hong Kong dollars."

Bets were held on the Round 10 fixture between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory at Hindmarsh Stadium on December 7, 2012.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton told a media conference on Thursday last week that football games were at big risk of being corrupted by illegal betting syndicates, saying there was a "vast increase" in betting on A-League games.

"We had over $40 million with one Asian bookmaker alone on an A-League match so soccer is certainly a big risk," Ashton said.

The next day Fairfax media quoted  FIFA's former head of security, Chris Eaton, as saying a "Hong Kong bookmaker took bets worth $49 million on the December 7 2012 game in Adelaide.

"Mr Eaton said this was $7 million more than placed with the same bookie on that weekend's famed Manchester derby in the English Premier League."

There was no clarification of the currency Eaton was discussing.

The FFA added Thursday that no A-League matches are subject to investigation by Australian law enforcement agencies.

"FFA wants to correct the coverage that has cast a shadow over one Hyundai A-League match," said FFA CEO David Gallop.

"Our integrity systems gave us the assurance that there were no concerns with the match at Hindmarsh Stadium.

"FFA has sympathy for the clubs, players and officials in that match who got caught up in that story. It's a reminder that everyone must be careful to deal with the real evidence. The facts can have a calming effect and this is a case in point."
