Drew Mitchell will leave Australian rugby and join French powerhouse club Toulon next year.

Mitchell made his decision to turn down an offer to re-sign with the ARU and the Waratahs overnight and put pen to paper on Tuesday with Toulon.

The 29-year-old will re-unite with good friend Matt Giteau, who is a star at the cashed-up Top 14 outfit.

While keen to keep playing Tests for Australia, it is understood Mitchell's desire to test himself in European competitions while still young enough and fit enough to play well was a big factor.

Mitchell will join an incredible stable of star foreign recruits at Toulon in 2014, including Jonny Wilkinson, Bryan Habana, Bakkies Botha, Rocky Elsom, Andrew Sheridan, and a few handy local types as well like Freddy Michalak and Matthieu Bastareaud.
