The Hawks prevailed 13.11 (89) to 11.12 (78).
The visitors bounced away to a 22-point lead at the first break, but the Crows rallied in Ben Rutten's 200th game to trim that deficit to less than a goal at half-time and the last change.
Luke Hodge was superb for Hawthorn with 29 touches, while Patrick Dangerfield finished with 35 possessions.
Brent Guerra hobbled off the ground with an injury midway through the final term, but it was Hawthorn who finished full of running.
