Yamaha's MotoGP points leader Jorge Lorenzo took pole position for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix after a record-breaking qualifying run.

Lorenzo clocked 1 minute 44.969 seconds at the end of the one-hour qualifying session, smashing the qualifying lap record of 1:45.267 set by Australian Honda rider Casey Stoner last year.

Lorenzo's nearest rival in the championship, fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, posted the second fastest time on his Honda followed by Britain's Cal Crutchlow on a Yamaha.

Pedrosa clocked 1:45.215, 0.246 seconds slower than Lorenzo who claimed his sixth pole start of the season.

Stoner, having missed the past three races due to injury, qualified seventh fastest on his Honda.

Live blog: Australia v New Zealand

Big clash ... the Kangaroos take on the Kiwis on Saturday night. Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

The trans-Tasman battle between Australia and New Zealand is always hotly contested and Saturday night's end of season Test match between the Kangaroos and the Kiwis looks set to add to the rivalry.

Join us to enjoy all the action from 7pm (EDT) for a live and interactive blog of the Townsville Test, which should provide a compelling contest and plenty to talk about.

Last time the two sides met, in this year's Anzac Test in Auckland, the Kangaroos were too good, winning 20-12.

But the Kiwis have a number of form players at their disposal with seven backing up after the NRL grand final.

The decision of Canterbury-Bankstown man-monster Sam Kasiano to side with his country of birth will also give the Kiwis a lift.

Will it be enough to give New Zealand a sniff of a big upset?

In the hot conditions expected, anything is possible.

It shapes up beautifully for a classic end of season encounter on Saturday night.

Bookmark this page and return from 7pm (EDT) Saturday to be part of the discussion as we enjoy all the action.

Jets ruin Del Piero's home debut

Sydney FC are still searching for their first win of the season after going down 3-2 to Newcastle Jets in a blockbuster encounter that featured both Alessandro Del Piero's and Emile Heskey's first A-League goals.

The highly anticipated clash was billed as the battle between Italian legend Del Piero and former England striker Heskey.

And while they ended their duel level, Sydney FC were left winless but not disgraced, in what was a spectacle for the record regular-season crowd of 35,419 at Allianz Stadium on Saturday.

P W D L GD Pts
1 Adelaide 2 2 0 0 3 6
2 Wellington 1 1 0 0 2 3
3 Heart 1 1 0 0 1 3
4 Perth 1 1 0 0 1 3
5 Newcastle 2 1 0 1 -1 3
6 Central Coast 1 0 1 0 0 1
7 Western Sydney 2 0 1 1 -1 1
8 Victory 1 0 0 1 -1 0
9 Brisbane 1 0 0 1 -1 0
10 Sydney 2 0 0 2 -3 0

The match had the atmosphere of a grand final and both teams played as though a trophy was at stake, as they tried desperately to make a statement after opening their 2012/13 campaigns with 2-0 losses.

Ryan Griffiths opened the scoring for Newcastle, with Heskey and Craig Goodwin adding their own for the visitors while Del Piero and Blake Powell found the net for Sydney.

The crowd were left silenced when Griffiths scored Newcastle's first goal of the season after only 11 minutes as a result of a Goodwin corner and some scrappy defending.

Re-live all the key moments from the match with our A-League Match Centre, featuring video highlights and statistics.

Sydney were awarded a free kick in the 26th minute when Tiago Calvano brought down Del Piero and the Jets' Brazilian import would come to regret his tackle a minute later when the former Juventus striker levelled the scores.

The entire stadium held their collective breath when Del Piero stepped up to take the free-kick, but soon exploded when his spectacular shot from about 25 metres out hit the back of the net.

But the Jets went 2-1 ahead just before the break when Griffiths got the best of Sky Blues skipper Terry McFlynn to cross the ball to former Liverpool striker Heskey, who scored with a good volley.

Ruben Zadkovich looked like extending the Jets' advantage just after the re-start with a powerful free-kick forcing a diving save from Sydney gloveman Ivan Necevski.

But it was Goodwin who gave the Jets a 3-1 lead, combining beautifully with Griffiths to find the back of the net.

Del Piero tried to get one back for the Sky Blues with half an hour to go with a shot from the outside of his right foot that just shaved past the post.

It was Blake Powell however who found the net again for Sydney in the 74th minute with a well-placed header from a Brett Emerton cross.

Sydney tried desperately to find the equaliser with a flurry of shots in the dying minutes but they were all in vain as the Jets held on.

The Red Bull driver is four points behind Ferrari's Alonso going into Sunday's race.

Spaniard Alonso, desperate to get back among the points after a first-lap retirement in Japan, registered the third-fastest time, 0.328 seconds slower than his title rival.

The McLaren of Jenson Button was fourth fastest followed by the Mercedes of Michael Schumacher, Felipe Massa in a Ferrari and Schumacher's teammate Nico Rosberg.

Briton Lewis Hamilton, quickest in the first session at a cool but sunny Yeongam, could only managed eighth fastest in the afternoon.

Tim Sheens says he'll stand down as Australia coach after next year's Rugby League World Cup, provided the ARL Commission decide to extend his contract next January.

The 61-year-old has held the role since 2009 and is desperate to lead the Kangaroos in their quest to reclaim the trophy won by New Zealand in 2008 when Ricky Stuart's side slumped to a stunning 34-20 loss in the Brisbane final.

Sheens's men take on New Zealand in Townsville on Saturday and his future will be decided by John Grant and the ARL Commission early in the new year.

It would be a surprise if the four-time premiership winning coach, who's lost just one of 17 international games, wasn't kept on but he's taking nothing for granted.

"I am not saying I deserve anything," Sheens said on Friday.

"I've enjoyed what I am doing and if it finishes for me here then I am happy with what I've done. But I would be very keen to carry on."

However, the former Wests Tigers mentor, who was axed after 10 years at the NRL club last month, is happy to walk away after 2013.

"I would be thinking that. It would be a five-year cycle from the last World Cup and I sort of started with a view to that, although I didn't make it public," he said.

"The plan was to win back the trophies. We now hold the Four Nations after holding it then losing it.

"That isn't played again until after next year now so the main focus now is the world championship.

"My aim would be to there and then stand down after it."

Sheens was one of several coaches linked to the Warriors position before Matthew Elliott was appointed on Friday.

However, he denied that was ever in the frame for a move across the Tasman.

Join us from 7pm (EDT) Saturday for a live and interactive blog of the Kangaroos v Kiwis Test match in Townsville.

"I was never in for it and never particularly focused on it," he said.

"I have only been focused on this and sorting out my issues with the Tigers.

"I've always said, when this Test is over, that I would sit down with them and sort it out next week."

The Kiwis have a wretched record in one-off games against Australia and have not beaten the Kangaroos in such a format since 2003 when a Clinton Toopi hat-trick inspired a side coached by Daniel Anderson to a 30-16 win in Auckland.

Sheens's only defeat as coach came against Stephen Kearney's side in the 2010 Four Nations final and he has warned against writing them off.

"We've not lost one of these games for a while, but in saying that, we've never had a game where the Kiwis have just laid down," he said.

"You can never predict you are going to win, every Test so far against the Kiwis there have been turning points.

"Thankfully we have managed to win most of them, but it could so easily have gone the other way."

Vics crush Queensland by 10 wickets

Pattinson ... was instrumental in Victoria's win over Queensland. Source: AAP

Rather than knock on the Test selectors' door, James Pattinson all but knocked it down with career-best figures to set up Victoria's stunning 10-wicket Sheffield Shield win over Queensland at the Gabba on Friday.

SHEF - Gabba

10 October 2012 - Day 3, Session 3

Victoria 2nd Innings

C. Rogers 21 31 4 0 67.74
R. Quiney 25 27 1 1 92.59

In what must warm the selectors' hearts ahead of next month's first Test against South Africa at the same venue, Pattinson (6-32) was at one stage on a hat-trick as the Bulls lost 7-32 to be routed for 125 in their second dig late on day three.

The Bushrangers shot down the victory target of 48 in just 9.3 overs.

Pattinson - who had match figures of 8-61 - showed no mercy as the Bulls at one stage lost 5-9.

It was a compelling case to line up alongside Victorian teammate and mentor Peter Siddle in the opening Test against the Proteas.

Especially after Pattinson picked up 5-27 at the same ground on Test debut last summer against New Zealand.

Siddle is expected to chime into the Test pace attack with fellow hard-hosed quick Ben Hilfenhaus against South Africa with selectors tipped to rotate young speedsters Pattinson, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc throughout the summer.

However, Pattinson has given himself the best chance to get first crack.

"It is always good taking wickets, it puts your name up for selection," Pattinson said.

"Hopefully I will be up there in the (Test) mix, (but) it's a great time for Australian cricket with so much depth in our bowling."

In a not so subtle hint to selectors, Pattinson said lessons learned from the past - including his Test debut - had taught him how to handle the lively Gabba deck.

"It is a good place to bowl when you get it right but it can go the other way when you don't and become easy to score on," he said.

"In my first Shield game here I got hit for 130-odd runs off 30 overs or so.

"And, I know it isn't an excuse, but I was probably a bit nervous (on Test debut) but I came out (in the second innings) with a clear frame of mind and just tried to bowl fast and hit the wicket hard, and I took that into this game too."

Remarkably Parkinson's career-best figures marked his first five-wicket Shield haul.

His only other bags of five were in Tests - both against New Zealand last summer.

Siddle was nursed through the Shield clash, finishing with match figures of 4-57 off just 20 overs.

But Siddle also did some damage with the bat - he struck 54, his second-straight half century, in a 112-run seventh-wicket stand with Matthew Wade (89) that helped guide Victoria to 227 and first innings points.

Siddle joined Wade at the crease with Victoria battling at 6-68 late on day one in reply to Queensland's first innings of 149.

They resumed on Friday at 6-174 after rain all but washed out day two.

Luke Feldman (3-66), Alister McDermott (3-45) and Ben Cutting (3-47) impressed with the ball for Queensland.
