The Sea Eagles, the team everyone loves to hate, has South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters in their sights after a spectacular thrashing last night of arch-rivals Parramatta.

The seven tries to one carve-up boasted all the hallmarks and qualities that has delivered Manly their past two premierships in 2008 and 2011.

The debate among league experts and fans today should be; is this side better?

Completely out classing their inexperienced rivals, Manly showed no mercy as they turned an 16-0 halftime lead into a virtual rugby league clinic to cement their third-place position on the ladder.

This was always a match for only the most ardent Eels supporters.

Even club legends, gathered together to celebrate those golden years through the 80s when the club won four premierships in six years, were caught cramming the match-day program prior to kick-off, searching for any resemblance of the character that the likes of Kenny, Wynn, Cronin and Sterling once possessed in the famous blue and gold jumper.

Today, Ricky Stuart will join the search party.

To be fair, the Eels gave the sniff of an upset in the opening 10 minutes as the home side, pumped full of emotion, rolled through their sets with vigour and fast play-the-balls.

The problem was, their collection of rookies, unwanted and ageing players failed to take advantage of perfect field position and try-scoring opportunities.

Their game was a total conflict. A superb carry from Fuifui Moimoi quickly resulted in a drop ball. A classic last-ditch tackle from Tim Mannah brought the fans to their feet. An ill-directed kick from Ben Roberts, sat them back down.

By the 20th minute mark, the Eels had turned the footy over seven times, three times when deep on the attack.

A fear of failure does that.

Meanwhile, their opposition Manly, did the opposite.

The Sea Eagles are serious premiership contenders, that's obvious.

But what Manly showed last night was that there are deeper layers to this side than just first half try-scoring highlights from former Parramatta players Jorge Taufua, David Williams and Justin Horo.

They showed resilience, composure and the class to make the Eels pay every time they coughed up an error.

The match was over at half time with the Sea Eagles leading 16-0 nil. Second half tries to Tafua, Williams, Anthony Watmough, Daly Cherry-Evans and Brett Stewart sealed their dominant victory.

But it was their toughness that would have pleased coach Geoff Toovey most.

During the match the Sea Eagles resembled all the guile, class and experience of a heavyweight boxer.

They absorbed the flurry of punches from their excited opposition before unloading with a clinical combination of body blows to leave the Eels breathless.

The actual punches never arrived. Billed as a re-match between Manly's Steve Matai and Parramatta's Mitchell Allgood following their stoush last month, the only hint of fire came five minutes from fulltime when Jamie Buhrer needed to be separated from a gang of blue and gold jumpers.

Desperate days for Sharks

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 31 Juli 2013 | 16.42

The lawyer for Isaac Gordon (pictured) has threatened legal action alleging he has suffered a range of problems due to the supplements programme at the Sharks in 2011. Source: DailyTelegraph

How the hell can Cronulla survive what appears to lay ahead?

Cheers of joy rang loud throughout the Shire on Monday when the current board lived up to their pre-election promise to overturn the previous board's decision to sack four staff members.

Head trainer Mark Noakes was returned to his old job and for him and the three other sacked staff it was their first step to having their reputation restored.

But things change quickly at Cronulla.

New Sharks' Chairman Damien Keogh said of their decision: "On conclusion of the review, the board has determined that the actions which we have taken in respect of these staff are in the best interests of the club and we believe we have the support of our members in doing so."

But is this decision really in the best interests of the club? Why did they not wait until the ASADA investigation is complete?

Less than 24 hours after the board's "feel good"  decision  interim CEO Bruno Cullen walked out in disgust.

"I haven't seen any of the documentation that was made in the reinstatement process so it would be difficult for me to comment on that other than to say they've got the right to do it.

"From the documentation that I've seen that was around the original decision, it just makes absolute sense in a professional and corporate governance sense.

From what Bruno has seen the original board got it right and the new board horribly wrong.

Cullen was sent in by the NRL to guide Cronulla through this sorry mess, he had no other agenda other than to help the Sharks get on the right track.

Clearly the current Sharks board think they know better than this very experienced and respected football administrator.

Then no sooner had  Cullen left the building than the first lawyer was knocking on Cronulla's door threatening to sue the club on behalf of former player Isaac Gordon.

Gordon claims he suffered a range of problems that were a direct result of the 2011 supplements program.

"He feels very let down by the club and particularly the coaching staff," says Gordon's lawyer James Chrara.

The timing of this new legal action is no coincidence. Cronulla's decision to reinstate the staff members  is a green light to the lawyers who are hearing the  club effectively saying "we are ok about  whatever went on in 2011".

The previous board under Damian Irvine made the decision to sack the four men and stand down coach Shane Flanagan because they were advised  that if they didn't take that action then  the club would be seriously exposed to mass legal action from players.

The internal reviews that were done by Irvine's board earlier this year showed enough evidence to suggest to them that a "serious breach of duty of care may have occurred during the 2011 supplements program."

It's  becoming more and more  apparent that the original board under Damian Irvine perhaps know things that went on in 2011 that the rest of us may not.

Irvine has been cast out by the club and seen as someone who overreacted and caused great heartache to staff much loved by Sharks members and fans.

But  Irvine was also a fan before he was their chairman and headed the Cronulla supporters' club. He will tell you he made the decision to protect the club he's loved all my life.

Many believe he and his board panicked and overreacted. But did they?

Of course it needs to be said that the coaching staff and all related parties totally deny any wrong doing or knowledge of any banned substances being used during the 2011 supplements program.

So now what?  Next week the second round of player interviews begin and Gordon's legal action could be a snowball that turns into an avalanche.

The united stand by the current playing group may begin to crack if it appears the ship is going down.

Chiefs evolved after SBW: Sharpe

Sharpe says the Chiefs have evolved after losing SBW back to the NRL. Source: AAP

It will take a mighty effort from the Brumbies to defeat the Chiefs in the Super Rugby final with the hosts now boasting both a brilliant attack and the ability to build pressure - the latter of which they had to master after losing Sonny Bill Williams.

I thought the Brumbies' achievement last week was fantastic. The way they withheld the Bulls' onslaught and then came back and scored from that one opportunity was magnificent. It was probably one of the gutsiest final quarters I've ever seen.

And then the Chiefs-Crusaders game, well, what a game of rugby that was. I think the semi-finals were what everyone hopes for from playoffs footy, they were both really good games that produced a lot of great rugby and loads of excitement.

You've got to feel for young Bulls skipper Dewald Potgieter. I think you can put his decision not to take those penalty goals against the Brumbies down to inexperience. In that particular atmosphere and in front of that type of crowd, you can be made to feel a bit bulletproof – the Bulls were really putting the pressure on and thought they could really put the final dagger in.

But credit to the Brumbies – they withstood that and then responded with a wonderful try. However, had the Bulls stuck to accumulating points I think we may well have seen a different result.

Brumbies prop Ben Alexander has received plenty of plaudits for the way he's responded since that third Lions Test. But to be honest, I think some of that treatment was a little unfair. The tighthead always gets the blame for a poor scrum performance but it's got to have the attitude of the entire eight.

Benny had the help of the other seven guys around him at the weekend and they got a good result. And he will have learned a lot from that Lions series – I think we'll see some of Ben Alexander's best rugby against the All Blacks, Springboks and Pumas.

You've got to give credit to the Chiefs for getting themselves into this position – it takes a mighty effort to even give yourself the chance to win back-to-back titles. Athletically, they're a very good side but I think the key to their success is that they all understand how they want to play the game. From Big Benny Tameifuna up front to Lelia Masaga out wide – they're all committed to the same gameplan.

Their set-piece, too, has come on in leaps and bounds over the last two years, and co-captain Craig Clarke has had a lot to do with the improvements at the scrum and especially the lineout. They're a team that can attack and score from anywhere but they're also a team that can build pressure. That's something they've evolved into this year, even without Sonny Bill Williams.

Then, of course, there's Aaron Cruden. The back-up All Blacks No.10 has had another excellent season and he steers the side around brilliantly.

We've already seen Matt Toomua's willingness in defence and I suspect Jake White will be asking more of him this week as the Brumbies try to unsettle Cruden. They're sure to send plenty of forward-runners Cruden's way too and while he doesn't miss many tackles these days, he does give up the advantage-line quite a bit.

What do you say about George Smith? I've run out of superlatives to describe the veteran flanker so I'm going to give Peter Kimlin and Ben Mowen a rap. George wouldn't be able to produce those game-turning plays without the help of his fellow backrowers and it's going to take the work of all three men to outplay the likes of Liam Messam and Tanerau Latimer.

I think the Chiefs will win even though I'd love to see the Brumbies get up. I just think the big travel factor plus the emotion of last week's win – quite often that can be a telling influence - might be too much for the Brumbies to overcome.

The Brumbies defence will be good and I have no doubt the Chiefs will have to work hard for it, but I just think the homeground advantage will see them over the line.

Clarke rejects retirement rumours

Michael Clarke insists he won't pull the pin on his Test career any time soon. Picture: Matthew Horwood. Source: Matthew Horwood / News Limited

MICHAEL Clarke insists that a dodgy back and dreadful losing streak will not force him from the game.

The Australian captain has rejected suggestions he may retire at the end of the return series against England next summer, particularly if his body and Australia's performances do not improve.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"I'm 32 and not 36 so luckily I've got a few years before I have that discussion," Clarke said after training at Old Trafford ahead of the third Test, which begins on Thursday.

The Australians are facing an ugly record. Already with six successive defeats behind them, they want to avoid equalling the greatest losing streak in the country's history, seven consecutive losses from 1885-1888.

"I'm like every other player, you get frustrated that you don't make as many runs as you would like and get frustrated that the team's not having success but that only makes the challenge more exciting," Clarke said.

"I want to help this team have success. I want to make sure I'm leading the way and scoring runs.

"I'm not ready to walk away from cricket. I love the game as much now as I ever have that's for sure. I have no intention to walk away from this game right now.

"I'm in it to achieve all I can as captain of this team and as a player. I feel like my game still has a lot of improvement left in it.

Follow the third Ashes Test with our MATCH CENTRE, featuring video of every wicket and boundary, and get all the best reaction and analysis in our LIVE BLOG.

"As a captain you probably take it more personally when the team doesn't have as much success as you would like, which probably just makes me work harder."

Clarke says he tries not to think about the losing streak, Australia's worst since 1984, when the team lost six on the trot to the then mighty West Indies.

"Losing six Test matches in a row we're not proud of. We definitely don't train for that," he said.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

However Clarke won't be discussing this dismal run with the team.

"That record is irrelevant," he said. "Unfortunately, or fortunately, records are made to be broken. This is one we don't want to break.

"I was part of the team that won 16 in a row, so I guess I'm seeing both sides. But it doesn't put any extra pressure on you as a player.

"The reality is you want to win every time you walk out on to the field. But you have to perform at your best to do that.

"If we don't and we lose this Test match, we'll hold a record that I certainly won't be proud of and I don't think anyone in the current team will be proud of."

Clarke is the only player to score a century during that period while nine have been made against Australia.

"I don't know the answer," he said. "To make big runs you've got to bat plenty of time. You've got to find a way to get through the tough periods and that's what we haven't been able to do.

"When England have bowled well, they've managed to get not just the one wicket but they've got two or three quite quickly and that has put us under the pump."

Wenger willing to wait for Suarez

Arsene Wenger has revealed he is prepared to wait for his transfer targets as he claims Arsenal can win the Premier League title with or without new signings.

The Gunners have already put in a £40,000,001 bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez but Wenger is relaxed about the lack of progress on the deal and is not expecting transfer activity ahead of the Emirates Cup next weekend.

"We are ready to do quick deals but all the transfers do not depend only on us," said Wenger, quoted in the Daily Mirror. "But we are prepared to wait. It looks unlikely before the Emirates Cup.

"We still have a strong squad but we are there on the market to try to strengthen our team. With or without additions we can be title challengers next season."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has publicly questioned the wisdom of Suarez leaving Anfield to join Arsenal as he insists it would be a sideways step - but Wenger would not be drawn on the matter.

"He must explain that," added the Arsenal boss. "I don't know. We are not close to signing Suarez or anybody else so there's no reason why I should talk about it.

"There is nothing to say. I have been away now for two or the weeks and it's hard to see how things are advanced because everyone is on tour at the moment and it's very difficult to get in touch with people.

"What has changed recently is that in Europe some countries like France suddenly have bought some very talented players who two or three years ago would all have come to England. It makes the chase for talent very difficult.

"What we want is not a name but a good player. The name is less important. What is more important is the quality of the player. At the moment I must tell you we are not close to signing anybody.

"We try to do the job and we will try to do it well. But that is in front of us. We have worked a lot but nothing has been concluded with anybody.

"Of course we want to do as many top players as we can. But we also have to focus on the players we have and develop them."

Graham Murray fighting for his life

Former North Queensland Cowboys Graham Murray Source: Liam Driver / News Limited

GRAHAM Murray was fighting for his life Sunday evening after having his life support switched off.

Contrary to news reports Murray has passed away, the former Cowboys and Roosters coach remains alive this evening, although doctors at Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital have pronounced him brain-dead.

Family members made the decision to switch off Murray's life support Sunday after being summoned by hospital staff to visit the former NSW State of Origin coach.

Murray had been in poor health for some time and was hospitalised at the Princess Alexandra after a suspected heart attack earlier this month.

It was the coach's second scare after he suffered a heart attack in March and spent a week in a coma.

Murray was due to coach the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls in the Intrust Super Cup this year but stood down due to ill-health.

Murray holds a special place in Queensland rugby league's tapestry, becoming the first coach to steer the Cowboys to an NRL grand final in 2005, only to lose to Wests Tigers in the decider.

The former halfback had previously been to a grand final, with the Roosters qualifying for the 2000 decider in his first season in charge at the Bondi club.

The Roosters suffered a 14-6 loss to the Broncos and Murray had one more season at the club before taking over at the Cowboys, where he had seven successful seasons.

In a long and distinguished coaching career, Murray also coached the Leeds Rhinos in England, the Hunter Mariners in Australia's Super League and the Illawarra Steelers in the NSW Rugby League.

He also played at the top level for both Parramatta and South Sydney.
