Adelaide thumps Mariners 4-0

ADELAIDE United recorded its second win of the season after belting A-League champion Central Coast Mariners 4-0 at Coopers Stadium on Saturday.

It was also Adelaide's first victory over Mariners since 2009 after the Reds had suffered nine consecutive losses to Central Coast.

And for the first time this season Reds skipper Eugene Galekovic kept a clean sheet.

Bruce Djite scored his first goal since February 3 this year to set Adelaide on its way in 25th minute of the first half before Fabio Ferreira made it 2-0 five minutes before the break.

Sergio Cirio embarrassed the Mariners nine minutes after half time when he chased down a ball which gloveman Liam Reddy tried to police out of play.

With the benefit of doubt - the ball appeared to be out of play - Cirio snuck the ball in between Reddy's legs before poking the leather into an empty net.

Substitute Jeronimo Neumann made it 4-0 a minute before time when he beat the Mariners offside trap before cooly slotting the ball home from 12m.

And Adelaide - in a first for the season - used a cautious approach and locked down the game after Cirio scored the club's third and played the counter attacking game for Neumann's fourth goal of the season.

Cirio created Djite's first goal of the season when he found space on the left flank stormed past Mariners defender Storm Roux before the Reds striker's deft touch was enough to send the ball into the back of the net.

Cirio was again the provider for Ferreira's goal when the Portuguese finally found his range when he slammed the ball between Reddy's legs.

But Ferreira succumbed to a groin injury and was replaced by Neumann during the break.

Neumann was on the pitch for less than 90 seconds when he forced Reddy off his line with the gloveman's decision good enough to break up the attack after Cirio again sped past the Mariners last lines.

But it was evident Adelaide had changed its usual possession based game plan to one which was varied between tiki-taka and long range passing.

Mariners, however, fired the first Reds scare of the clash when Mitch Duke broke the Reds high defensive line but could not do much more with the ball as the fringe Socceroo charged into the box after just 45 seconds.

But Adelaide weren't rattled and continued to work on a new game plan as it sat off the Mariners defensive back four before applying a press in midfield.

Adelaide, however, managed to survive a myriad of botched Mariners golden chances to take the lead with the first opportunity arriving after seven minutes.

Michael McGlinchey's cross from a short corner eluded Reds defender Michael Zullo before Mariners defender Trent Sainsbury's misdirected volley fell at the feet of Daniel McBreen.

With the goal at his mercy McBreen blasted the ball over the bar from 5m.

A minute later Ferreira failed to get a shot on target after a perfect Marcelo Carrusca through ball and with just Reddy to beat the Portuguese hit the side netting.

But the nature of Adelaide's open game still allowed Mariners to have pop shots.

Duke's 8m shot stung the head of Osama Malik when Josh Rose became the provider in the 10th minute before the forward had another chance on target five minutes later when Marcos Flores found an opening on the right flank.

Ferreira then created a great opportunity when he twisted and turned, fired a 20m shot over the bar in the 15th minute before the Portuguese again found space when Carrusca fed yet another glorious through ball in the 18th minute.

But in the one-on-one situation Reddy again won the battle before Cirio forced the former SA-based SASI keeper into a save in the 22nd minute.

Live: third Ashes Test, day two

ALASTAIR Cook has been dismissed after producing his best knock of the Ashes series to steady England on day two of the Third Test in Perth.

The England captain was caught by David Warner off the bowling of Nathan Lyon on 72.

Playing in his 100th Test, Cook earlier produced a half-century to lead the tourists to 2-118 at drinks in the final session, having earlier bowled Australia out for 385.

Click here to see a full scoreboard, ball-by-ball commentary, stats and FoxTracker in our Match Centre.

The English skipper found a willing ally in Kevin Pietersen, who was unusually circumspect in creeping to 4 off 40 balls as Australia's bowlers put a clamp on scoring.

In stifling conditions that saw the temperature top 40C at the WACA Ground, Cook looked composed at the crease as he set about trying to keep his country alive in the series.

He formed an 85-run stand with Michael Carberry for the first wicket before a double-strike late in the middle session of the day handed Australia the ascendency.

Joe Root was the victim of an unlucky dismissal after he was adjudged to be caught behind off the bowling of Shane Watson shortly before tea.

Root reviewed umpire Marais Erasmus' decision, and while Hot Spot failed to show any significant mark, Snicko suggested the faintest of noises as the ball passed the outside edge of the bat.

Root shook his head as he trudged off for 4, leaving Cook and Pietersen to carry England's innings.

Ryan Harris (1-21) produced the initial breakthrough in the searing heat, ending an 85-run stand for the opening wicket when Carberry (43) deflected a ball onto his stumps while trying to leave.

It was fine reward for effort for the hard-working seamer, who maintained a disciplined line and length to lead the Australian attack on the bouncy Perth deck.

Australia's bowlers rallied late in the middle session after a luckless start, with England managing just 19 runs in the second hour as scoring became harder to come by.

The pressure eventually told on Carberry and Root, with the sun-drenched WACA crowd coming to life as a sea breeze provided some relief from the blistering heat.

Aussies get Saturday night fever

CRICKET Confidential takes a different view of the second day of the third Ashes Test in Perth, as Australia battle hard to keep England down.

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER

It was another hot day in Perth and with each wicket taken by Australia came another piece of evidence the scorching temperatures were taking their toll on the brains of the combatants.

When the contest was at its most tense, Mitchell Johnson tried to engage Kevin Pietersen by performing an unusual dance mid-pitch.

Pietersen's innings was all about suppressing his instincts and getting under bouncers rather than going after them.

So after another duck and dive Johnson tried to play on KP's ego by laughing at him and then imitating his evasive action.

Saturday night fever was soon coursing through the rest of the Australian team, with David Warner jumping to his feet for a jig and a jive after diving forward to get rid of Alastair Cook.

Typical of the no nonsense workhorse Peter Siddle, he wasn't having any of it.

When he again proved Pietersen's bogey man, he stood their with his face red with rage, probably caused by the posturing of his teammates.

Pies bank $600,000 interest

COLLINGWOOD pocketed more than $600,000 in interest after banking a controversial $10 million federal government grant last year.

The grant - for community facilities at the Magpies' Olympic Park base - was announced in May 2012 and came as a surprise to the State Government, which through the Melbourne Olympic Park Trust owned and managed the land.

Collingwood said the funding agreement with the former Labor government stipulated that interest earned on the grant be directed back into the project.

NEW NAME FOR HARRY

The club said the scope of the project had been widened because of the interest windfall.

After the funding announcement, Victorian sports minister Hugh Delahunty said: "The tenant has announced starting a renovation without approval from the landlord first" while federal Liberal senator Cory Bernardi blasted the deal as "slipshod".

The $10 million grant and associated interest - along with a further $1.15 million grant from the MOPT for the refurbishment of Collingwood's office facility - were included in the club's total revenue figure of $75 million for the year ending October 31.

The Magpies received a total of $935,798 in interest - up from $389,748 in 2012.

Collingwood said preparatory works were underway on the community facility and hoped to finalise the tender process for a builder within a fortnight.

The project has now received approval from all authorities, with the club spending $1.29 million of grant and interest money on the planning and approval process.

The original forecast was for the project to cost $15 million, but that figure could now exceed $20 million.

Collingwood yesterday said it may spend $10 million of its own money.

The club said the community facility would allow greater access to the Olympic Park Oval, provide public toilets and locker rooms, links to the river, riding and walking trails and the Tan. Meeting and event rooms, a health and wellness centre, cafe and theatrette are also planned.

No new drawings or impressions of the facility were available last night.

A spokesman for Federal Sports Minister Peter Dutton said "This is one of numerous projects provided with grants by the previous government.

"Details of the interest earned have been reported to the department. The new Coalition Government is bound by the existing contract on this project."

The Herald Sun understands that whether to pay grant money upfront is a decision made at the government's discretion.

The project is expected to be completed by June 2015.

Happy Hodge a Hawk for life

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

HAWTHORN premiership captain Luke Hodge is off the free-agent market after signing a contract extension that will tie him to the Hawks until the end of 2015.

Hodge signed a contract in April for next season but had to achieve certain goals to trigger an extra season.

The 29-year-old played 23 games this year, missing only one with a broken thumb that required surgery, and finished fifth in the club's best-and-fairest.

Speaking from Hawthorn's altitude training camp in South Africa, Hodge said he had wanted to see how his body handled this year after a disappointing 2012 when injuries limited him to 10 games.

"I guess the query after 2012 was just how was the body going to hold up and then after this season, we are all confident the body has still got a few years left in it," he said.

"When you are in your late 20s and getting close to 30 and you have injuries, there is always a question mark over your durability and how long you can go for, but I got through the last pre-season OK and only missed that one game with a broken thumb.

"The body backed up pretty well."

Hodge is keen to continue as captain, a job he has held since taking over from Sam Mitchell in 2011.

"I think last season, and not only that we won the premiership, was probably as enjoyable a year as I've had," he said.

"You learn so much every year you do it.

"The first year you want to impress everyone and you probably overdo it and you try to take on everything yourself and then, as you get more comfortable in the role, you learn how to delegate and you give more responsibility to the other leaders around you.

"I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to doing it again."

The Hawks were on Tuesday facing their second full day of training at the famed Royal Bafokeng Sport Campus after arriving there earlier this week. They return to Australia late next week.

"It's impressive and England used it to prepare for the World Cup in 2010," Hodge said.

"It has great facilities and we are here for a fairly vigorous training campand. Our fitness guy Jacky Russell has got a lot planned for us over the next seven to ten days."

And Hodge said the players will enjoy what South Africa has to offer, including safaris, but they all know they are overseas for an intense training camp.

Hodge has been impressed with the club's new recruits, including former St Kilda ruckman Ben McEvoy who the Hawk skipper says has been impressive since the day first walked into his new home at Waverley Park only a few weeks ago.

"Obviously he was touted very highly at St Kilda and you can see why the minute he walked into the footy club," he said.

Dokic comeback falls flat

AFTER two long years on the sidelines, Jelena Dokic was looking hard for the positives following her loss to Jarmila Gajdosova in the Australian Open wildcard playoff.

Having finally recovered from surgery to fix a chronic wrist injury, the former world No.4 could hardly have drawn a tougher first-up opponent.

The hard-hitting Gajdosova has also been unable to play much in 2013 after contracting the viral infection mononucleosis, although she is significantly further down the comeback trail than the 30-year-old Dokic.

And it showed as Gajdosova won 6-2 6-4.

"I thought I would be a lot more nervous,'' said Dokic, who looked well short of full fitness and wore tracksuit pants throughout the first-round encounter.

"I knew today, whether it was a win or a loss, I was happy to get the first one out of the way.

"It's the worst one.

"Nearly two years out is a very long time, even for a top-five player.''

Now without an official ranking, Dokic will continue to work hard on the practice court and take any wildcards on offer this summer, while also doing some television commentary work.

Gajdosova, who was ranked as high as No.25 in the world two years ago, settled quickly after a nerve-wracking start.

"It was nowhere near where I want to be and how it's supposed to be,'' she said.

"But you've got to start somewhere and so I did.

"With Jelena, we know each other really well - we've both struggled very much throughout the year.

``She's trying to make a comeback, I'm trying to make a comeback and it's unknown what is going to happen.

"My illness was shorter than her (injury). She has definitely had a tougher time than I have.''

Top seed Casey Dellacqua cruised into the second round with a 6-2 6-1 win over youngster Maddison Inglis.

In the men's event, Brisbane teenager Akira Santillan overcame an early bout of nerves to secure an upset victory over No.2 seed Matt Reid.

Having never played a five-setter before, the 16-year-old Santillan fought back from a mid-match blip to win 6-2 6-2 4-6 4-6 6-3.

His second-round opponent will be Wimbledon and Australian Open junior champion Luke Saville, who also needed five sets before overcoming Bradley Mousley 6-4 7-6 (7-2) 2-6 2-6 7-5.

Last year's playoff winner Ben Mitchell cruised past Harry Bourchier 6-4 6-1 6-0, while top seed John-Patrick Smith beat Marc Polmans 6-4 6-4 6-4.

Both overall playoff winners earn wildcards into the main draw of next month's Australian Open.

Siddle unsung hero, Root ravishing

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 08 Desember 2013 | 16.42

THE big names of this Ashes series were outshone by their less celebrated counterparts on day four of the second Test in Adelaide.

Check out our review of the best batting and bowling performances in Can Bat, Can Bowl.

Can Bat - Joe Root (87)

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Root stated his case for a long-term stay at No.3 with an assured performance at Adelaide Oval.

The baby-faced batsman taught a lesson or two to some of his more senior teammates with the manner in which he batted.

Playing every ball on its merits is easy to say, but it's another thing to consistently do it, and that's precisely what Root did.

He was cautious without getting badly bogged down, and showed an impressive array of shots that had seemed to be put away in the kit bag earlier in the series.

He was especially impressive against the spin of Nathan Lyon, against which he had looked rather uncomfortable in Brisbane.

The 22-year-old was eventually brought undone by Lyon and a nice catch by Brad Haddin, and in truth probably deserved a hundred.

But the grit and determination shown by the Yorkshireman will stick in the mind of teammates, selectors and fans alike.

Can Bowl - Peter Siddle (2-21)

Australia's Mr Reliable has been just that so far in this series, but has also been far from spectacular.

That was until today, when he picked up the key wickets of Kevin Pietersen and Michael Carberry.

It was the ninth time he's dismissed Pietersen in Test cricket, a quite remarkable statistic given the South African-born batsman's dominance over the majority of bowlers in world cricket.

The Victorian maintained a nagging line just outside off stump - the "Corridor of Uncertainty" or the "Avenue of Apprehension", depending on who you ask - that resulted in him finishing the day with a rather impressive economy rate of 1.61 from his 13 overs.

Worthington key to Tigers' win

Tigers star Mark Worthington shrugs off injury to inspire thrilling victory. Picture: Getty Source: Robert Prezioso / Getty Images

MELBOURNE Tigers coach Chris Anstey was told more than once that he should not recruit forward Mark Worthington.

It was never anything personal against the two-time Olympian.

But the two are close friends and there is an old saying you should never mix friendship with business.

Worthington proved to be the exception to the rule yesterday when he shrugged off a slipped disc in his back to inspire the Tigers to a crucial 84-82 win over NZ Breakers.

Knowing his mate and the team needed a spark after three consecutive losses, the big man played like his life to depend on it score a game-high 21 points in 36 minutes.

"People talk about not getting into business with friends and people told me not to recruit him because he's a friend," Anstey said.

"I was brought up that you've always got your mate's back, so I'm going to work my arse off for my friends.

"I think he's the same - I know he's not going to leave anything out on the floor."

Worthington said the result was good reward for hard work following a tough period.

"It was a giant sigh of relief after that one and the boys were great," he said.

"The last two weeks have been a bit sloppy but we could see the end process of our hard work.

"We will all keep putting in the work."

Worthington was well assisted by import guard Mustapha Farrakhan, who produced his best NBL game to date with 20 points, six assists and two steals.

Anstey said his side was due for some luck.

"I know we got a bit down over the last few weeks, but I think we deserved a result like that," he said.

"It didn't feel like we had much luck on top of everything else.

"Today it was nice to feel like we didn't get unlucky."

The Tigers started poorly in recent weeks but they jumped quickly out of the blocks yesterday.

They led by six points at quarter-time but fell away in the second term to trail by four at the main break.

It was a three-point lead to the visitors at the last change.

It immediately became a five-point gap when Bruton made a steal on Farrakhan and laid it off to Gary Wilkinson in the opening play of the final quarter.

But Melbourne would not yield.

They fought back to secure a win they just had to get.

Stop living off past glory: Strauss

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

FORMER Test skipper Andrew Strauss says England must stop 'soft' dismissals and living off past glory then hope Kevin Pietersen masterminds a great Ashes escape in Perth.

England (6/247) finally showed some second innings grit in Adelaide through a 111-run, third-wicket stand between Pietersen (53) and courageous No.3 Joe Root (87) on the fourth day in Adelaide.

Needing 284 runs or rain on the final day to avoid a 2-0 scoreline, England's three successive Ashes wins will count for little without a collective effort at the traditional graveyard the WACA.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

"The senior players have had a lot success but you can't live off that success. We are in the present, the here and now," said dual Ashes winning skipper Strauss.

"You need to perform, you are a senior player. If you all go out and take responsibility you have a chance.

"There has been such a massive turnaround from England from last Ashes series, they have to wrestle back the momentum."

Openers Alastair Cook (1) and Michael Carberry (14) fell to leg-side traps while erstwhile Ian Bell (6) exited uncharacteristically to Steve Smith's part-time leg-spin yesterday.

Pietersen finally showed some focus with a subdued half-century before claimed for a ninth time by Peter Siddle.

Australia has preyed upon Pietersen's ego in three cheap dismissals this series and England needs more from its gamebreaker.

"I think he is the key for England's way out of this and he is the one batsman who can take Australia on and dominate them," said Strauss, who locked horns with Pietersen over the South African text message affair that punctuated a home series loss against the Proteas last year.

"There have been quite soft dismissals all three of them really. In big series you want you star performers to stand up."

Keeper Matt Prior, the engine of room of England's recent Ashes success, has been in decline since the March tour of New Zealand where he averaged 103. Prior averaged 14 in the return series against the Kiwis, 19 against Australia and contributed 2, 26 and 0 in his first three innings this summer.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Strauss had feared Prior was "in a bad place" mentally and his place "in jeopardy". However Prior would have been encouraged finishing undefeated on 31 yesterday with Stuart Broad (22).

"He has been in poor nick but has been such a big part of England's success and bats really well at No.7, another one who can take the game away from the opposition," 100-Test opener Strauss told Fox Sports.

England has to defy history and win for just the second time in Perth to have any hope of retaining the Ashes.

Strauss said England's top order must stand up to tearaway Mitchell Johnson who can be "very good or very bad."

"They are going to have to show some resolve, turn their attention to Perth otherwise it is game set and match," said Strauss.

"It is hard to see us getting anything out of Perth as we have only ever won once there."
