Surging Sky Blues too good

Young gun ... Terry Antonis provided Sydney FC with plenty of attack. Source: Dean Lewins / News Limited

Sydney FC's charge to the A-League finals gathered more steam as they beat Adelaide United 2-1 to post a club-record fifth straight home win on Saturday.

Second half goals to youngsters Terry Antonis and Blake Powell delivered a deserved win in front of 15,602 fans at Allianz Stadium.

The win ensured Sydney climbed up to fifth spot, handing them some precious breathing room inside the top six with six regular season games to play.

The victory capped a memorable day for the club, after they earlier announced the signing of Socceroos captain Lucas Neill for the rest of the season.

Despite a sense of optimism surrounding Neill's imminent arrival, and the midweek re-signing of coach Frank Farina, Sydney were slow out of the blocks.

However, they were clearly the better side by the time a dour, scoreless first half drew to a close.

Sydney lost Peter Triantis to a suspected knee injury after halftime and he was replaced by Paul Reid.

But it didn't stop them coming to life, as Alessandro Del Piero struck the left post with a curling, 30-metre free kick just minutes after the break.

It wasn't long before Sydney took the lead when Antonis struck in the 49th minute with his first A-League goal in 35 appearances for the club.

The midfielder collected the ball from Reid and there was more than a touch of fortune as his shot took a wicked deflection off Reds defender Iain Fyfe and went in.

Sydney kept up the pressure as Reid went close and the dangerous Del Piero forced a good save out of Eugene Galekovic.

But the goalkeeper was powerless to prevent Sydney's second goal in the 66th minute.

Adam Griffiths barged onto a corner kick and Powell was there to clean up the scraps, turning the ball in from close range.

Adelaide kept the game alive when substitute Tomi Juric collected a Galekovic free kick and strode away to score.
There were some nervous moments for the home side, but they withstood some late pressure to seal a vital win.

Buckley ponders Cloke's free kicks

The first look at Collingwood's new attack had coach Nathan Buckley asking questions about Travis Cloke's free-kick count.

The Magpies opened the AFL's pre-season cup with wins over the Western Bulldogs and Essendon on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.

Cloke received a free kick and goalled late in the Essendon game to put the Magpies in front, but overall Buckley clearly thought the left-footer had a raw deal.

Friday night was the first time Cloke had combined with fellow key forward Quinten Lynch, who was recruited from West Coast.

Lynch has taken the place of Chris Dawes, now at Melbourne.

"It can be better, still," Buckley said of the Cloke-Lynch combo.

"They're two big units - Clokey has a knack of giving free kicks away but not getting any.

"So early in the year, I have to work that one out.

"Lynchy is thereabouts and he's going to give him a really good foil."

Lynch, Clinton Young (Hawthorn) and Jordan Russell (Carlton) all made encouraging starts for Collingwood.

"I don't think we could have asked for more from our mature recruits," Buckley said.

"Jordan Russell excelled in both games, we'd only planned to play Clinton in one of the games and he played in the second."

Brent Macaffer, who missed last season with a knee reconstruction, has also impressed Buckley.

The forward returned on Friday night for his first senior appearance since 2011.

"If Beamesy (Dayne Beams) has accolades for being able to turn himself around in the last 12 months, I think what 'Caf' has been able to do without playing a senior game of footy is nearly equivalent,'' Buckley said.

"But ... the fans haven't witnessed it.

"Day in and day out, his application to his footy is chalk and cheese to what it was 18 months ago.

"If he continues to do that, he's going to give himself the best chance."

Buckley said Alex Fasolo, Alan Toovey and Nathan Brown were chances to come into the team for their next NAB Cup game on March 3 against West Coast.

Brown was supposed to play on Friday night, but was a late withdrawal with back tightness.

The Eagles held the lead at half-time but quickly fell behind as the Cats found their run but the conditions soon caught up with them as the Eagles got back on top.

Brad Dalziell kicked a super goal for West Coast and it appeared the home team would cruise home but the Cats never say die and captain Joel Selwood kicked his own super goal with 13 seconds left on the clock to seal the victory, 1.6.4 (49) to 1.6.2 (47).

Youngster Andrew Gaff was everywhere for the Eagles while George Horlin-Smith was a standout for Geelong gathering numerous possessions.

Jack Darling was the leading forward for West Coast with three majors while James Podsiadly showed some early season form with two goals for Geelong.

Subtlety Stoner's V8 challenge

Nuances ... Casey Stoner is about to embark on his V8 Supercars career. Source: Brett Costello / News Limited

Don't expect Casey Stoner to tear up Australia's V8 racetracks this year.

That's the message from his Red Bull Racing teammates Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, who don't doubt the 27-year-old has the talent to adapt from a Honda MotoGP bike to a Holden Commodore.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

But Lowndes believes Stoner's biggest challenge will be subtlety, not speed when he competes in the second-tier V8 development series in 2013 following his stunning MotoGP retirement.

"It will be interesting to see how he goes,'' said Lowndes.

"I think the only thing against him at the moment is track knowledge.

"There's no doubt about his speed. But on a race weekend, when you've only got two 40-minute practice sessions to try to learn and develop the car (around the circuit)... that is probably going to be his Achilles heel.

"But he's a determined person and he's got great ability.

"We'll be giving him as much help as possible to help him get up to speed.''

V8 Supercars defending champion Whincup also thinks Stoner's ability to quickly learn the intricacies of the seven circuits on the schedule will likely make or break his transition.

"He's one of the best motorsport athletes that Australia has seen and has still got a lot to prove as well,'' said Whincup.

"It will take him a little bit of time. I'm trying to help him out.

"Don't think he's going to come out and set the world on fire.

"But with a few laps in the car, I think he's going to be very, very fast.''

Triple Eight Racing team owner Roland Dane, who played a big part in Stoner's recruitment, is as intrigued as any other motorsport fan with the two-time MotoGP champion's move to the category.

"I think there's every possibility that if he has a good run this year and gets confidence, you'll see him in a car in the main (V8 Supercars) series next year,'' said Dane.

Stoner's first chance to show he has the goods on four wheels comes in the first event of the series in Adelaide from March 1.

Essendon then had a break before playing Collingwood in the last game of the evening.

Star recruit Brendon Goddard had a team-high 13 possessions and Kyle Hardingham kicked the supergoal as the 'Dons won 1.5.6 (45) to 1.1.4 (19).

Essendon's defence was superb, the league's oldest active player Dustin Fletcher and his young key-defender apprentice Jake Carlisle dominating.

There was plenty of applause for the Bombers as they took to the field, a welcome change from the intense media scrutiny of the past few days.

Essendon are under Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority and AFL investigation because of supplements their players took last season.

The club was also implicated in the landmark Australian Crime Commission investigation into sport.

While the Bulldogs took the early initiative when Shaun Higgins kicked their supergoal, Essendon kicked the last two goals of the half to lead by 13 points.

They then kicked clear in the second half and first-year player Nick Kommer goaled seconds before the fulltime siren to add emphasis to the win.

Captain Matthew Boyd had a game-high 17 disposals for the Bulldogs and fellow midfielder Nick Lower also impressed in the first game for his third AFL club.

Demons to dodge tanking draft ban

Dodge ... Melbourne looks set to keep its future draft picks. Source: Hamish Blair / News Limited

Melbourne looks set to dodge serious charges and any draft penalties from the AFL despite an exhaustive seven-month investigation into tanking claims.

The Demons expect to be handed official penalties early next week that will see a heavy fine and sanctions for some officials, but no draft picks stripped from Mark Neeld's side.

Melbourne has been extremely confident for several months that the draft picks would remain intact and chief executive Cameron Schwab would not be charged.

Insiders said that Schwab was hardly mentioned in the 1000-page dossier which detailed allegations over a stretch of games from late in 2009.

But while a negotiated settlement still looks a likely outcome, Melbourne sources were defiant about accepting penalties.

The club was adamant it would not be bullied, and was determined to protect employees ''both past and present''.

Despite speculation the Demons could accept a fines of several hundred thousand dollars and a short ban, possibly suspended, against former coach Dean Bailey, no agreement has been made.

Chris Connolly also faces a likely ban from the football department, but he has worked away from football in a marketing role for 18 months.

While a heavy fine is likely, Melbourne is handed money from the AFL's disequalisation strategy so would have the league effectively funding their fine.

Bailey has consistently maintained he did nothing wrong, with Connolly is known to believe only four staffers confirmed of his throw-away line about not trying to win in the club's Junction Oval meeting room.

The possibility of a negotiated settlement has grown in recent weeks with the Demons in regular contact with the AFL about the tanking investigation.

The Demons had a arsenal of lawyers led by QC Ray Finklestein ready to unleash on the AFL if they were charged with attempting to lose games.

A Melbourne spokesman said on Friday the Demons were yet to receive an official set of charges or penalties from the AFL's acting football operations manager Gillon McLachlan.

Melbourne has been told by top legal experts is has an extremely strong legal case, which includes significant doubts about the manner in which interviews were conducted and whether they would stand up in a court of law.

The AFL's burden of proof falls on the club to prove its innocence, while in a court of law Melbourne believes it would be certain to win.

Former Melbourne star David Schwarz told the Herald Sun a negotiated settlement would save the league from significant fallout.

"This is such a hard decision for the AFL. This would have gone to court. Melbourne doesn't have to pay for legal representatives, because it has more lawyers than supporters.

"This looks like the sensible thing. They are acknowledging there is probably smoke, but not enough proof there was fire. Let it be a lesson to all of us that the rules put in place weren't conducive to sides finishing as high as high as they could. The AFL incentivised mediocrity, and history says we can't go back there.

"Deep down we all felt there were several clubs over eight years that didn't try 100 per cent 100 per cent of the time. The players tried, but I am glad this has come out, so it's not just an untold story hidden under the carpet.

"The AFL would realise if they penalised Melbourne hard they would have to go after other sides, and they don't have the resources or energy to do that."

Betting scandal: the $43m farce

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 14 Februari 2013 | 16.41

Whoops ... the $49m bet on an A-League match was actually in Hong Kong dollars. Source: Craig Greenhill / News Limited

That unbelievable news last week that Asian gamblers wagered almost $50 million on a single A-League game? The reason you didn't believe it is because it's not strictly true.

Football Federation Australian has revealed the Victorian police officer and FIFA spokesman who variously estimated the plunge at $40 million and $49 million were talking Hong Kong dollars, not Australian dollars. That puts the figure at a more believable $5-6m

"Football Federation Australia  wishes to correct media reports that more than $A40 million was wagered in Asia on a Hyundai A-League match in December 2012" said FFA in a statement on Thursday.

"The error occurred when media outlets reported the estimated figure in Australian dollars instead of the correct denomination of Hong Kong dollars."

Bets were held on the Round 10 fixture between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory at Hindmarsh Stadium on December 7, 2012.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton told a media conference on Thursday last week that football games were at big risk of being corrupted by illegal betting syndicates, saying there was a "vast increase" in betting on A-League games.

1 Central Coast 20 12 6 2 22 42
2 Western Sydney 20 12 2 6 11 38
3 Victory 20 11 3 6 3 36

8 Brisbane 20 6 3 11 -2 21
9 Wellington 20 5 5 10 -15 20
10 Perth 20 5 4 11 -4 19

"We had over $40 million with one Asian bookmaker alone on an A-League match so soccer is certainly a big risk," Ashton said.

The next day Fairfax media quoted  FIFA's former head of security, Chris Eaton, as saying a "Hong Kong bookmaker took bets worth $49 million on the December 7 2012 game in Adelaide.

"Mr Eaton said this was $7 million more than placed with the same bookie on that weekend's famed Manchester derby in the English Premier League."

There was no clarification of the currency Eaton was discussing.

The FFA added Thursday that no A-League matches are subject to investigation by Australian law enforcement agencies.

"FFA wants to correct the coverage that has cast a shadow over one Hyundai A-League match," said FFA CEO David Gallop.

"Our integrity systems gave us the assurance that there were no concerns with the match at Hindmarsh Stadium.

"FFA has sympathy for the clubs, players and officials in that match who got caught up in that story. It's a reminder that everyone must be careful to deal with the real evidence. The facts can have a calming effect and this is a case in point."

Hazlewood's injury woes continue

Luckless ... Josh Hazlewood's run with injury continues. Source: Phil Hillyard / News Limited

Josh Hazlewood's injury-plagued summer continued on Thursday, with the fast bowler suffering another foot injury which will rule him out of Australia A's opening two clashes with the England Lions.

It is feared Hazlewood aggravated a previous injury to his left foot during his four-over stint for Australia in his Twenty20 international debut in Wednesday night's loss to the West Indies at the Gabba.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

It is the latest in a long line of injuries for the luckless Hazlewood, who has battled back injuries as well as foot ailments during his brief career.

The 22-year-old was in line for a Test debut against Sri Lanka this summer before he suffered stress fractures in his foot to derail that dream and the bulk of his Big Bash season.

The extent of Hazelwood's current ailment is not yet known, and he could still play a part in the remainder of the series against the Lions.

He is likely to have scans in Sydney in coming days, which will determine his recovery.

Hazlewood will be replaced for the opening two games against the Lions, which start on Saturday in Hobart, by Queensland paceman Alister McDermott.

FOX FOOTY Supercoach preview: Carlton

Carlton key men ... Marc Murphy, Kade Simpson and Heath Scotland. Source: AAP

Which Carlton players should you pick in your FOX FOOTY SuperCoach team and who should you avoid?

Perhaps the most intriguing team of the looming SuperCoach season. The questions leap off the tongue _ How will Mick Malthouse effect the Blues' fantasy output? Can the high-scoring _ but horribly injury-prone _ Jarrad Waite string games together? What effect will the captaincy have on A-graders Marc Murphy or Andrew Carrazzo?

Will Malthouse finally elevate Bryce Gibbs' game to the level many believe he is capable of?
But a closer look at Carlton and its new coach sheds some light on the uncertainty. Malthouse's Collingwood sides of 2010 and 2011 were renowned for their tackling pressure, forward press and contested possession hunger.

At Visy Park, Malthouse inherits a side that was already second and fourth in contested ball and tackle differential respectively last year.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

Midfielders Carrazzo, Murphy, Gibbs, Chris Judd, Brock McLean, Kade Simpson and Mitch Robinson are all primed for big seasons. The cattle is there to implement Malthouse's blueprint.

Chris Yarran has already admitted that Malthouse "is all about everything on the boundary line", but this shouldn't hurt the disposal tallies of the Blues' prime movers. Scott Pendlebury, Dane Swan and co. racked up some huge numbers playing to Malthouse's philosophies.

The spate of injuries at Visy Park spelled disaster for many SuperCoach sides in 2012. Do you put it down to a year of bad luck, or are Carlton players simply too risky to take on? Another question.

SUPERCOACH SUPERSTAR: Marc Murphy (midfielder) $602,900.
Plays 16 matches in an injury-interrupted season and still averages 112. An amazingly consistent player who hasn't averaged under three figures since 2008 when he averaged 99. Good inside, good outside and clean in possession, he is the ideal midfield choice.

BANK `EM: Heath Scotland (defender/midfielder) $535,600
Yes, yes, Scotland will miss the first two games courtesy of a club-imposed suspension for an off-season incident. But given head-to-head league matches don't start until Round 3 he could slot in nicely. One of the most consistent defenders in the game and rarely puts in a stinker. Of course, if you're gunning for overall SuperCoach honours you will want to avoid him.

Kade Simpson (midfielder) $501,300
Another in the super-consistent category, but one who not many coaches pick. Sits below the rung of A-graders at Carlton, but that gives you a point of difference.

BUY `EM: Chris Yarran (defender) $362,00.
Here is a player who could really improve under Malthouse. Comes at a bargain $362k, which suits the mid-priced strategy _ a winning formula last season _ perfectly.
"Yaz" has declared himself fitter than this time last year and has aspirations to break into the Blues' midfielder this in 2013. Easier said than done, but if Mick gives him the odd crack it the points will pour in.

Bryce Gibbs (defender/midfielder) $509,800
The sort of player who could really respond to a Malthouse rocket. Also dual-position, so play him in defence and watch him closely in the NAB Cup to monitor his midfield minutes. Should increase in value.

BURY `EM: Andrew Carrazzo (midfielder) $517,800
Controversial omission, but he loses his DPP status this year, meaning you can only pick him in midfield. Unique pick, but at nearly $520k there may be better options.

Brock McLean (midfielder) $568,600.
Deserves credit for an amazing 2012 that knocked the critics flat on their backs. But can he go any better? At 568k are you really going to give him a midfield berth before the likes of Judd, Hayes, Dal Santo, Goddard or Stanton? Probably not.

WATCHLIST: Jarrad Waite (forward) $520,000
If you're willing to pick a bloke like this for Round 1 you're either a serial risk-taker or the most one-eyed Carlton fan on the planet. As injury-plagued as anyone in the game, Waite hasn't played 20 games in a season since 2008. But if he starts stringing them together and churning out the numbers he may prove hard to resist in the second half of the season.

Matthew Kreuzer (ruckman) $494,100:
Hasn't quite lived up to the hype yet, but he was recruited at No.1 because he starred as a No.1 ruckman. We know Mick is a big Kreuzer fan and if he plays him permanantly in his preferred position, big scores could ensue.

Stoner set standard: Dovizioso

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 13 Februari 2013 | 16.41

Casey Stoner ... set the standard for MotoGP riders. Source: William West / AAP

MotoGP has lost a yardstick for the sport with the retirement of Casey Stoner, according to new factory Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso.

The Italian said the Australian dual world champion was one of the greatest innovators of the elite series.

Stoner retired last year after becoming disenchanted with the sport and is set to race V8 Supercars this year.

Gallery: Casey Stoner's career in pictures

Dovizioso, who will try to do something this year only Stoner could manage - win a world title on a Ducati, described his former rival as a racer everyone tried to emulate.

Seven-times world champion Valentino Rossi might have more silverware, but it was Stoner who was the standout rider of his era, Dovizioso said.

"A lot is going to change,'' Dovizioso said.

"Since I am a fan of bikes, to see Casey ride was a show and I am going to miss what he could do and how he did it on the bike with his style.

Need for Speed. Stoner, Webber and Whincup go head-to-head!

"It is going to be easier, of course, because a competitor like him is always difficult to beat, but I think Casey changed a lot in MotoGP.

"For example, the approach to testing and the lines he took on the track. All riders try to study and improve and Casey was one of the riders that we took as a reference.''

He placed Stoner above Rossi in terms of talent.

"If you look at the past, nobody was able to go strong and fast from the first or second lap.

"I recall when Valentino was dominating that in the post-race tests, he could - within four laps - do the same lap as the record in the race.

"Casey could do this on the first lap.

"But we have all become aware that this can be done and we can all try and do it. Not having a strong and talented reference, though, is something we are all going to miss.''

Hugh Pyle ... was explosive off the bench in last season's Fantasy Super Rugby. Source: David Crosling / AAP

Following on from Tuesday's top five tips, 2012 Fantasy Super Rugby champion Daryl Johnson runs the rule over three dos and don'ts for this season's competition.

Daryl has revealed several key dos and don'ts to help bolster your roster and maximise your points for each round.

Follow the Fantasy mastermind to ensure you get the jump on your mates and colleagues this year.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Time is running out! Enter your Fantasy Super Rugby team now!

DOS

1. Do try to ensure that your reserves have a realistic chance of playing most weeks. Having Hugh Pyle ($250K) as my reserve lock last season was one of the main reasons I won the competition. He came on for my team when Nathan Sharpe injured his back. He scored 2 tries in 5 minutes and those extra points catapulted my team into the lead.

2. Do try to pick a captain and vice-captain that are reliable. It's imperative they can make you thirty points even on a bad day at the office.

3. Do a check of the weather and playing conditions. This may effect who you pick as captain or play as a reserve. Fantasy coaches love a dry track and attention to this detail may get you that extra couple of points.

DON'TS

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Get Adobe Flash Player

1. Don't keep players who are underperforming in your squad. Unlike your personal favourite Super Rugby XV there is no room for sentimentality with Fantasy coaches. Conversely, not picking a player who you despise but is playing at the top of his game is also a recipe for disaster.

2. Don't pick backrowers whose primary role is pilfering the ball for their team. If they fall foul of the referee, penalties will kill their score. David Pocock ($425K) is the exception to this rule, sometimes.

Matt Cleary takes a unique look at round one of the Super Rugby competition

3. Don't fill your team with players from the bottom half of the ladder. They may be cheaper but there is usually a good reason why, apart from first year rookies.

ROOKIES TO WATCH

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

1. Ardie Savea ($100K), Hurricanes, backrow

New Zealanders take their backrowers very seriously. This younger brother of All Black, Julian Savea, is being touted as a future international. The flanker has performed well during trial games and will undoubtedly get a run this season, sooner rather than later.

2. Bundee Aki, ($80K); Charlie Ngatai, ($125K), Chiefs, centres

These two young barnstorming centres are fighting it out for the position left vacant by Sonny Bill Williams. Another factor to consider is that All Black centre winger Richard Kahui ($275K) is one hard tackle away from his seventh shoulder operation.

3. Johnny McNicholl, ($75K), Crusaders, winger

Crusader's winger stocks are running low with Zac Guildford in rehab, Sean Maitland playing overseas and Kurt Baker injured. This young speedster knows how to find the tryline and should get the call-up in the early fixtures.

In conclusion, I would like to wish all Super Rugby Fantasy managers good luck for the season.

Ex-Test quick Harris back for Bulls

Ryan Harris ... looks set to make his return for Queensland. Source: News Limited

Six months of frustration appear over for Ryan Harris with the ex-Test quick being named in his first Queensland side since serious shoulder surgery last year.

The burly fast bowler is set to be given the green light to run with the Bulls in Saturday's one-day clash with Victoria at the MCG, capping a frustrating stint on the sidelines since going under the knife in August.

Harris, 33, must pass a final fitness test on Thursday morning but has been included in the Bulls squad taking on the Bushrangers.

However, he has not been asked to back up in Queensland's Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria starting on Monday.

Harris played the last of his 12 Tests on the West Indies tour last April but, since then, has been challenged by the latest on a long list of injuries.

However, Queensland chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns was confident Harris would take the first step towards breaking back into the Test team this weekend.

"Ryan is building his match fitness nicely but, at this stage, it is best if we continue to take a patient approach," Hohns said of Harris missing the Shield clash.

"As long as everyone is happy with how things are tomorrow, playing in the one-dayer will be a good, manageable target for him."

The Bulls have also rewarded Brisbane grade cricketers, with Joe Burns, Cameron Boyce and Ben Cutting called up for Australia A's upcoming clashes with England Lions.

Left-handed batsman Dominic Michael and 20-year-old quick Ronan McDonald are set to make their Bulls debuts.

Michael, 25, has been selected in the one-day and Shield line-ups while McDonald is in the squad for the four-day clash.

Bulls one-day squad: James Hopes (capt), Luke Pomersbach, Peter Forrest, Greg Moller, Nathan Reardon, Dominic Michael, Chris Hartley, Nathan Hauritz, Cameron Gannon, Alister McDermott, Matthew Gale, Ryan Harris. (12th man to be named)

Bulls Shield squad: James Hopes (capt), Greg Moller, Luke Pomersbach, Peter Forrest, Nathan Reardon, Dominic Michael, Chris Hartley, Nathan Hauritz, Cameron Gannon, Alister McDermott, Matthew Gale, Ronan McDonald. (12th man to be named)

Five-eighth options Berrick Barnes (knee) and Bernard Foley (ankle) are rated 50-50 chances of starting in the Waratahs' opener against Queensland in Brisbane on February 23.

Also in doubt for the start of the season is exciting winger Peter Betham who is battling an ankle injury.

The setbacks to playmakers Barnes and Foley has given 22-year-old Super Rugby rookie Ben Volavola a huge chance to stake a claim for the No.10 spot when he goes up against Crusaders and All Blacks superstar Dan Carter on Thursday.

"They're (injuries) a bit troubling because they are all around that same position that 10, 12, 13,'' said Cheika.

"But sometimes the circumstances push something to the surface and Ben Volavola is going to get a good chance to take the lead in the race for that 10 jersey.

"There's a few options at 12 obviously. Tom Carter, Michael Hodge are options.

"It just depends on the mix. At this stage I'm not too worried about next week (Reds). We'll just see who plays well in Thursday's game and try and pick a team from there.''

Former Randwick No.8 Cheika has backed Volavola to rise to the challenge of facing Carter after a couple of impressive showings in trials.

"He'll probably be so excited about going out to match up against a guy like Dan Carter,'' he said.

"And it's up to the rest of the of the team to make sure he can challenge one of the best players in the world in his own position.''

Cheika will also throw a rugby lifeline to 30-year-old former Western Force and Melbourne Rebels pivot James Hilgendorf who has returned to Sydney and is working as a teacher.

"If he's feeling comfortable with everything he can have a run on Thursday,'' he said.

"It would be a big ask for him because he hasn't done a lot of training but that's alright.

"Obviously we've got Sam Lane's contract that we can refill. If James puts his hand up then he's a chance of taking that contract in a few weeks.''

Robin van Persie might have something to say about that question, but praise continues to pour in for Tottenham's star after another match-winning display for Tottenham against Newcastle United on the weekend.

Comparing him to Cristiano Ronaldo has become the fashionable analysis at the moment, and it's hard to deny the similarities after he proved the decisive factor for the third game on the trot for his side.

Focus is growing on Bale's exploits – and speculation mounting about an imminent move to Spain. Can you imagine him teaming up with Ronaldo?

But as Andre Villas-Boas tries to create a Spurs side that can challenge consistently for the top-four and beyond, the retention – or sale – of the Welsh winger will give a great indication of chairman Daniel Levy's vision for the club. Can they use Bale as bait to tempt other world class players, rather than a tasty bit of business?

"People also move when they find other players are able to promote their own potential," Villas-Boas said after the weekend's win. "Gareth has that effect."

His figures this season are outstanding: 13 goals in 22 appearances, 45 shots on target, with a further 50 chances created via shots or assists.

"We are fortunate to have a player of such a dimension who is helping us to win games," Villas-Boas said.

"Gareth is enjoying his football through the middle and he seems to enjoy it more than playing on the left flank, but we know he can play anywhere. There are always going to be questions about whether Tottenham can keep hold of him, but I have answered this many times. He is happy here, he is enjoying his football and we have no need to sell him.

"What I don't want is for this just to be just about Gareth because we win as a team. It was an important victory for us because it puts other teams under pressure and when you consider Newcastle's form, it shows what a great, great win this is for us."

Newcastle United's Steven Taylor had this to say about his adversary after the weekend: "For me, Gareth Bale is a world beater. He is the complete player. It is like playing Ronaldo. He is one of a kind – he is like Cristiano Ronaldo.

"He's one of those who can produce that bit of magic. You have to be on your toes all the time and just pray to God that he doesn't score. "

The swashbuckling nature of his second goal had all the hallmarks of Ronaldo – but we might be going off a little too soon comparing Bale with a player who has netted 24 times in 22 games this term, including yet another hat-trick on the weekend (his 20th for Real Madrid).

With Tottenham clinging onto fourth spot, Bale's got the stage to live up to the current hype.

Burns ready to fire in T20

Standby ... Joe Burns prepares for Australia's T20 against West Indies. Source: Glenn Barnes / News Limited

By his own admission, the reaction from most Australians when his name was added to the national Twenty20 squad was universal - Joe Who?

And Queensland batsman Joe Burns reckons the public may still be none the wiser when Australia take on the West Indies in their one-off T20 international at the Gabba on Wednesday night.

Australian cricket's rising star is no guarantee of playing after Adam Voges (hamstring) was given until the last minute to prove his fitness.

Burns is technically on standby for Voges - but he looked more like a man on tenterhooks on Tuesday after the carrot of an international debut had been dangled in front of him.

Not even being asked to front the pre-match press conference alongside national captain George Bailey helped convince him he was close to an international debut.

Burns admitted he had not even asked fellow Queenslander Ben Cutting for advice while in the national squad because he did not want to set himself up for disappointment.

"I haven't spoken too much to Cutsy because at this stage Vogesy is still playing,'' Burns said.

"It is a bit hard to look too far.''

However, Burns' stats show he is no average Joe.

Burns, 23, claimed the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award at last week's Allan Border Medal ceremony after amassing 1,038 runs at 35.09 in all forms throughout the voting period.

And he is considered an outside chance of an Ashes call-up after earning selection for Australia A's upcoming five-match series against the English Lions.

But asked on Tuesday whether he thought punters would have said 'Joe Who?' when named by national selectors for Brisbane's T20 game, Burns said: "Yeah. But I am very excited if I do get the chance to play in front of friends and family.

"It is one of the best places to make your debut.''

He may not taste international cricket on Wednesday night.

But Burns was confident that he could handle it after pulling off a form reversal for Brisbane Heat following the disappointment of being named 12th man in a January 12 Big Bash League clash.

Burns fought his way back into the Heat T20 side and helped them win a maiden title with a 27-ball 43 in the final against Perth Scorchers.

"Unfortunately I was 12th man (for the Heat) but in the back end of the season we had some big games and I was happy with how I performed, considering they were essentially knockout fixtures for us,'' Burns said.

"That sort of pressure will be similar to maybe what it is like tomorrow night.

"I guess the fact I was able to perform in those games will give me confidence going in.''

Meanwhile, Bailey (hamstring) also gave himself until game day to prove his fitness but was expecting to play.

T20 withdrawal frustrate Bailey

Written By Unknown on Senin, 11 Februari 2013 | 16.41

Withdrawals ... George Bailey believes the Aussie team can still entertain. Source: Theron Kirkman / News Limited

Frustrated Australia Twenty20 captain George Bailey understands why he will lead a depleted side against West Indies in Brisbane on Wednesday but fears it may compromise their World Cup countdown.

Bailey would have been forgiven for feeling like the last man standing in the T20 side as the 17-strong Australian squad assembled in India for their four-Test tour.

And his team for the one-off T20 international may be depleted further after Queensland batsman Joe Burns was called in on Monday as cover for Adam Voges (hamstring).

As a result, the finale for Australia's international summer of cricket resembles a fizzer.

"It's frustrating. No doubt Cricket Australia have prioritised the Test series - I don't blame them for that,'' Bailey said.

"But we've got seven or eight games until the T20 World Cup (in Bangladesh in 2014).

"It (preparation) does feel a little compromised.''

And Bailey said if rumours of a change to the 2014 World Cup format were true, world No.7 Australia needed the best preparation available to get out of the "danger zone''.

The number of teams have been expanded from 12 to 16 at the 2014 T20 World Cup but Bailey appeared anxious over how many automatically qualified.

"I have heard they are going to change the format...there will be a certain amount who automatically qualify,'' he said.

"I have heard six and I have heard eight, and we are in that danger zone.

"So every game as a group is important...in terms of trying to maintain some structure and continuity.''

Ticket prices for Wednesday's T20 international ranged from $45 to $105 but Bailey baulked when asked if fans would be short changed.

"It is frustrating. I am sure they (fans) would like to see the best 11 available,'' he said.

"I don't think they will be short changed...but will the best players be there? Not necessarily.''

Burns is in line to make his international debut along with the likes of WA quick Nathan Coulter-Nile and NSW batsman Ben Rohrer on Wednesday after being placed on standby for Voges.

Voges twinged a hamstring during his match-winning 112 not out in Australia's 17-run ODI win over the Windies on Sunday night, completing a five-game sweep.

Bailey - who missed the ODI finale at the MCG - was confident he would overcome his own hamstring complaint.

Meanwhile, quick Ben Cutting denied he had been given a ``cheap cap'' before running out on home ground the Gabba in national colours for the first time.

"I have worked as hard as the other boys,'' he said.

"It's part and parcel of being a fast bowler. It gives you opportunities but it can also take them away with injury and what not.''

Harbhajan starts taunting Australia

Big talk ... Harbhajan Singh says he can't wait to get stuck in to Australia. Source: AAP

Talkative spinner Harbhajan Singh says he's itching to get another crack at Australia in the upcoming four-Test series.

Comeback kid Harbhajan could hardly wish for a better way to mark his 100th Test than to win a recall to India's side just in time for a home series against Australia.

And the 32-year-old provocateur has regained his status as a national hero as local newspapers celebrate the return of the ''Turbanator''.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

Harbhajan has been named in a 15-man squad for the first two Tests of the series which starts in Chennai on February 22 and he's likely to form a three-pronged spin combination with Pragyan Ojha and Ravi Ashwin.

The man with a fabulous record against Australia of 90 wickets in 16 Tests says Australia's possible line-up of four left-handers in their top six, plus their lack of experience in five-day cricket in India, will boost the home side.

''I cannot wait to bowl against my favourite team,'' Harbhajan said on Monday.

''I am very happy and feeling very relieved after getting selected,'' added Harbhajan who was overlooked for December's fourth Test against England in Nagpur.

Harbhajan said his five-wicket haul for Rest of India in last week's five-day game against Mumbai showed he was still a Test-class bowler.

''This game was very important for me. I bowled very well,'' he said in the Times of India newspaper.

''Apart from Michael Clarke and Shane Watson, most of them are travelling to India for the first time.

''It won't be easy for them at all.

''They haven't played much Test cricket and they haven't played in India.

''This will be a challenging series for them.

''Hopefully we'll put them under pressure from the first day of the Test and show how we play cricket here.''

Australia's likely top-order trio of David Warner, Ed Cowan and Phil Hughes and wicketkeeper/batsman Matthew Wade have yet to play a Test in India and all are left-handers as Harbhajan prepares to spin his offbreaks away from the outside edge.

Harbjhajan's latest crack at Australia adds to his reputation as a tormentor.

The fiery spinner sparked the ''Monkeygate'' scandal during the Sydney Test of 2008.

Harbhajan was suspended for three matches for racial abuse after his clash with Andrew Symonds, but the ban was reduced to a fine for abuse on appeal.

Dopers won't take bait: psychologist

Doping ... Psychologist Patsy Tremayne doubts guilty players will come forward. Source: Supplied

Former AFL Players Association psychologist Patsy Tremayne has termed the Australian Crime Commission's report release a "fishing expedition'' and doubts whether many dopers will take the bait.

Justice Minister Jason Clare said on Sunday some players had already come forward with pertinent information following the ACC's shocking revelations about widespread doping, links to crime and even an apparent case of match-fixing in Australian sport last week.

Clare had been forthright at Thursday's ACC announcement, warning professional sportsmen to not ''underestimate how much we know, and if you are involved in this come forward before you get a knock at the door''.

But Tremayne, an associate professor at University of Western Sydney, believed the stick being waved by Clare and his counterparts would be ineffective in most cases.

''I think they (players involved with doping or match-fixing) would be very torn right now, thinking 'should I come clean or not?' and 'will it get better for me?'.'' Tremayne said of the ACC's Project Aperio findings.

''I'm sure that they'll be weighing up whether they've done much to get caught or not.

''I believe a very small number of people would have come forward so far.

''I dont think there's going to be an avalanche by any means.

''I'm not sure, but I think with a lot of them the feeling would be 'well we can't trust the government' to a large extent.

''Unless they've been fairly blatant and they know that other people know ... or if they have a few enemies who might dob them in.''

Tremayne warned on Monday of the psychological challenges that dopers face.

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player.

''These athletes are essentially living a lie by keeping their doping to themselves and hiding it from their friends and families, and the constant subterfuge would eventually take a toll,'' Tremayne said.

''I just think they're going to be left with a legacy of shame for what they have done.

''When their careers are over and they have children, they will feel deep regret and shame.''

However she was doubtful of just how widespread the issues were.

''In some ways that crime report is really just a fishing expedition it seems. That's my opinion, unless they bring out hard data.''

Tremayne said there was no simple answer to ensuring sports stars resist the temptations of doping, but that bringing them outside the club's bubble was crucial.

''A lot of footballers get into a situation where they don't mix with anyone outside the club.

''I think sports clubs could make a concerted effort to try and encourage them to have external people in their life more and do more external things, instead of having them in the bubble.''

Watto's not taking my spot: Cowan

Opener ... Ed Cowan is under pressure at the top of the order. Source: Brett Costello / News Limited

Australian opener Ed Cowan says he welcomes the return of vice-captain Shane Watson to the Test side, but it won't come at his expense.

Cowan on Sunday defended his record as opener with David Warner.

Watson has voiced his continued interest in returning to the opening slot after scoring 83 at No.4 in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Melbourne in December, then missing the Sydney Test with a calf injury.

The star allrounder's decision to shelve his interest in bowling at the moment due to injury concerns has removed the issue of how his position in the batting order affects his bowling workload.

Watson says opening is where he feels most comfortable.

"I've had my most success there in Test cricket especially,'' Watson said.

Watson's blazing form as an opener in the one-day series against the West Indies in Australia, with scores of 122 and 76 on Wednesday and Friday respectively, has fuelled the speculation.

"I'm not here to put extra pressure on Ed at all,'' added Watson, who's due to join Cowan in Chennai in the next few days.

"All I've said is the reasons why I got moved down the order were mainly to do with my bowling, to get the balance right.''

Cowan says Watson has shown he can bat anywhere in Australia's top six.

"I'm quite comfortable with myself and Davey (Warner) opening the batting,'' Cowan said.

"We've been the most successful opening partnership over the last 14 months both in terms of volume of runs and average per innings.

"So I can't see why anyone would suggest they'd want to break that partnership up.

"But it will be great to have Shane in good form, batting somewhere in the top six.''

Cowan will play in Australia's opening tour match against an Indian Board President's XI at Chennai's Guru Nanak College Ground on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Cowan said the question of Watson possibly returning to opening was no issue at all within the team's ranks.

"The public want to have their say and we understand that. There's nothing I can do but score runs and enjoy trying to win Test matches for Australia,'' the 13-Test player said.

"The trial-by-public takes care of itself if you're scoring runs.

"Shane Watson has had a great one-day series but so has George Bailey. I don't think we can read into one-day form particularly much.

"I'm sure Shane will contribute wherever he's told to bat.

"If I'm doing all that I can and scoring runs, then Shane Watson opening the batting doesn't become an issue.''

Botha tests positive: report

Francois Botha, the former heavyweight world champion beaten by Sonny Bill Williams on Friday night, has allegedly tested positive to a banned substance.

Fairfax Media reports Botha failed a drugs test on the eve of the fight.

The report suggests results of a urine sample submitted by the 44-year-old South African in Brisbane last Tuesday under WBA regulations show he had Phentermine - a banned stimulant - in his system.

The drugs test, which has now been forwarded to the WBA's global headquarters in Panama, also detected Benzodiazepine, which suggested Botha was also using a valium-type product.

Leading sports doctor Peter Larkin told Fairfax the two substances had an opposite effect.

"One puts you to sleep, one keeps you awake," Larkin told Fairfax Media.

"Phentermine is part of the go-fast group, as I call them, which is similar category to all of the adrenalin amphetamines...anything that is a stimulant that keeps you awake and improves your reflexes."

According to witnesses who saw Botha in his dressing room before the fight, he was extremely relaxed in the lead up to the fight.

However, once the fight got under way, he was alert and continually taunted Williams.

Sydney revival continues with win

Young and old ... Del Piero celebrates with Triantis. Source: Mark Evans / News Limited

Experience and youth combined to fire Sydney FC back into the A-League's top six with a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero became Sydney's most prolific scorer with his early goal while Besart Berisha levelled with a first-half penalty.

2 Western Sydney 20 12 2 6 11 38

8 Brisbane 20 6 3 11 -2 21
9 Wellington 20 5 5 10 -15 20
10 Perth 20 5 4 11 -4 19

But it was young midfielder Peter Triantis who sealed the win, opening his Sky Blues account with his 69th-minute strike.

The victory lifts the Sky Blues into sixth spot - the first time they've been inside the top six since round four - while Brisbane dip to eighth.

Del Piero broke the deadlock in the seventh minute when he was able to get on the end of a clever flick from Blake Powell and masterfully moved past Roar defender Ivan Franjic to score his 11th A-League goal - a record haul for a Sydney FC player in one season.

The Roar's new Dutch recruit Stefan Nijland tried to level moments later, forcing a save from Sydney gloveman Vedran Janjetovic in his first start for Brisbane.

Mitch Nichols also kept Janjetovic busy with a shot from outside the box midway through the opening stanza.

Relive all the action in our live and interactive Match Centre, featuring video highlights of all the key moments.

But it was superboot Berisha who equalised after the Roar were awarded a penalty when Sydney defender Fabio brought down Nijland in the box.

The Albanian stepped up to the mark and made no mistake, also scoring his 11th goal of the season to level at 1-1 a minute before the break.

Berisha threatened again early in the second half with a long-range effort but sent it just wide.

Sky Blues coach Frank Farina made a double substitution in the 60th minute bringing youngsters Joel Chianese and Terry Antonis on for Powell and Ali Abbas in an effort to create more pace up front.

But Brisbane continued their assault with Nijland just shaving the post.

A defensive error by late Roar substitute James Donachie gifted Sydney their second goal when his attempted clearance landed at the feet of waiting 21-year-old Triantis whose powerful strike put the hosts 2-1 up in the 69th minute sending the 14,589-strong crowd into a frenzy.

Del Piero almost widened the gap in the dying minutes shattering the woodwork with his spectacular free-kick.
